senate republicans in states across the country are shutting down debate wherever they're passing a trump gerrymander congressional map - in texas, missouri and now north carolina
Senate Democrats attempted a final act of resistance Friday night, with Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) preparing for a filibuster, warning that the maps would deny Black and Latino voters fair representation. But Republican leaders acted before she could do that, using a procedural move to cut her off, force an immediate vote and push the bill to the Governor’s desk. “What we’ve seen in this redistricting process has been maneuvers and mechanisms to shut down people’s voices,” Alvarado said as her filibuster attempt was shut down. “There were a few other senators ready and willing to step in and filibuster, but that was shut down as well.” Republicans pushed the map through the legislative process at breakneck speed, just over a week after the special session began Sept. 4. The Missouri House took its final vote Tuesday, sending the map to the Senate. A Senate committee approved it Thursday – though not a single Missouri voter testified in support of the bill during the Senate hearing. Senate Republicans voted Friday to cut off debate on the measure and move forward with the vote. The most powerful Republican in North Carolina, Senate leader Phil Berger, cut off Senate Democrats’ debate Monday night during a controversial map vote, in a rare move the minority party leader likened to that of “a dictator.” It’s an allowable procedural move that’s been used in the House to end debate and get right to a vote, but has not been used in the Senate under Berger’s leadership, until now.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight.
