How A Publisher Almost Killed The Book I Waited My Whole Life To Write: a thread

My novel Villager came out in 2022. It was published by Unbound, who had little marketing/sales power. But I was excited & proud, since I worked so f-ing hard on it.

Here's an extract: www.tom-cox.com/the-village-...

Oh, I don't try to hide my weird.

I like to wave it around. It scares off the boring people and it's like a beacon for my fellow weirdos.

Pride and Prejudice is my comfort blanket.

Also...(a hill I will die on 😜)

Autistic vs Narcissistic
Mr Darcy - the socially awkward gentleman (as played by Colin Firth in the best adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice) Mr Wickham - the Rake (as played by Adrian Lukis in the best adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice)

My edits...when I work for hours and then turn out that one sentence that feels beautiful...1 down, 5,789 sentences to go.

Sometimes I wish my maths brain would shut up and let my creative brain have its moment. 🤣

That's just sad and pathetic. Would any of them work with an author who was openly racist? How morally bankrupt are they?

I already wouldn't touch Audible as it rips off authors, taking the lion share of their royalties and creating schemes within their monopoly that will further defraud authors.

For anyone who thinks Amazon's Teacher's Picks are genuinely picked by teachers and not AI, please be warned. Their age ratings often miss the mark by miles.

Suggesting Graham Greene's Brighton Rock is suitable from years 1-9 is recklessly misleading at best. Year 12-13 maybe, but year 1, never. 🤬

Not sure anyone can help me,but I want one of those mini thermal printers. You can pick the printers up cheap, but the paper is quite expensive. Worst of all, it appears you can't actually use the printer without a subscription app.

I don't want a subscription. I just want a mini thermal printer.

Okay.

*Deep breath*

Instead of yelling I'm too old for this 💩 at the TV, I finally need to admit I'm too old for occasional HIIT and daily dvd workouts like 30DS,

So I found this guy, and now I'm sad because this *is* my pace.

But I need this, so I can feel less old. 🙃

On 27th August 2015, The Shepherd's Crown, the last book Sir Terry Pratchett completed before he died, was published.

To mark the ten year anniversary, we have a message from Rob Wilkins:
It’s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd’s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.

But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you’ve already enjoyed and including The Shepherd’s Crown.

So the greatest way to honour Terry’s legacy is to pull that book you’ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy.

Yesterday's dog walk.

Too soon the season of 'can you spot the dog' has arrived. I'm going to need to get a new light up collar this year.
Orange hoggin path strewn with crispy orange leaves fallen from trees with turning leaves under an overcast sky. Snuffling in the leaves is an orange Cocker Spaniel, blending into her surroundings.
