Hi, Aaniin, Shé:kon:
I’m Anishinaabe, Nipissing FN/Dish With One Spoon. Nizh Manidoowag (2S🌈) and setter ancestry. I’m a Mohawk speaking Ojibwe (there’s a story here and if you follow you’ll have the privilege of my sharing it with you). I’ll forever be a lifelong learner of Anishinaabemowin.
Remember when prø-jeckt 2025 was our worst concern? Oh sweet summer child.

"200 yrs ago, the State we now call Mexico was established. After 300 yrs of the Spanish Conquista, in 1862, 65% of the population spoke an indigenous language.

Today, we speakers of indigenous languages make up 6.5%…

Our languages are not dying, they are being killed."

The study, learning and teaching of polysynthetic languages is a different beast. It feels very isolating at times. Anyone out there on #langsky wanna talk shop? Specifically I’m seeking to connect with other #indigenouslanguage learners/teachers who live this everyday. No curious brain pickers.

All the more reason why Indigenous language immersion schools should be remaining in the target language as much as possible. More language = more healthy development!

Intergenerational trauma sometimes has us putting extra pressure on ourselves for all kinds of reasons.

The best learning comes from making mistakes. Say it wrong. Say it weird. Laugh or cry, but just say it. Your silence will break your ancestors hearts more than any mistake you can ever make.

I’m not sure why I’m getting so many American, specifically democrats (thanks for being so outspoken btw!) following me, but I thought I’d let you all know that I’m not a super political account in the mainstream sense.

I realized recently how much I really like Level 42. It was a slow burn to get here, but I’m with it.

Honestly, I think a large part of why this country (Canada) and the United States don’t seem to learn from history is because neither teaches it’s real history.

Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie and Prince.

I miss you all so much, and as much as I wish you were here right now, I’m glad you’re not still suffering in this place. You left us medicine for these times, and I’m grateful. 💔

St. Croix Ojibwe highlighting what Indigenous sovereignty can look like.
That's what I'm talking about!!! Our people have a RIGHT to determine our own dang tribal membership. We have a right to expand and grow, outside the binds of white supremacy's blood quantum. Well done St. Croix Ojibwe!
With end of 'Native blood' requirements, St. Croix Ojibwe Tribe membership finally growing
The tribe has added 65 more members in little more than a year after it voted to remove federal oversight of its constitution, including blood quantum.

I co-wrote this story w/ Inuk teacher Sarah Angiyou re the importance of Elisapie’s music for promoting #Inuktitut, the challenges facing the language, & the need to respect Indigenous #language education rights.

Elisapie’s Juno-nominated album: Promoting Inuktitut through music
Beyond how beautifully Elisapie interprets classic rock songs, with creative choices like using throat singing to cover Metallica, her music also brings the Inuktitut language to a wider audience.

The two Indigenous languages I’m learning (Mohawk & Ojibwe) aren’t even on the The Foreign Service Institute difficulty ranking scale because they require far more than 2200 hours of study to become an ACTFL intermediate low level speaker. Our languages are sophisticated and beautiful. #langsky

I feel like saying this again since it feels more relevant every day.
Unpopular reality: #languageback is much more possible and urgent than #landback

We’d need land back to happen in less than 15 years if we wanna be speaking anything other than English while on that land. First language speakers are most precious - don’t just ignore them. They don’t have tanks.

I’m going to need the NDP to be more specific when they reference “crown land”. I hate these sort of sound bytes as they lack clarification. But let’s just name this is a red flag to a lot of Indigenous folx…
