The Bodleian Humanities Library, part of @bodleianlibraries, covering English, Music, Philosophy, Theology, Film Studies, History of Medicine, and Internet Studies

The Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. Founded in 1602 by Sir Thomas Bodley, it is one of the oldest libraries in Europe. With over 13 million printed items, it is the second-largest library in Britain after the British Library. Under the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003, it is one of six legal deposit libraries for works published in the United Kingdom, and under Irish law it is entitled to request a copy of each book published in the Republic of Ireland. Known to Oxford scholars as "Bodley" or "the Bod", it operates principally as a reference library and, in general, documents may not be removed from the reading rooms. .. more

F is for Feedback! #HumanitiesLibraryA-Z

Have any thoughts on the library? Do let us know!💭

Thanks to our readers, we've received lots of constructive feedback since our opening. From this, we've enacted various changes to the library's space and services as seen by our 'You said, we did' poster!

Heads up for our readers! Engineers are currently in working on our lift, so the very dramatic drilling noises you hear are no need for worry 🛗 Our help desk can advise you on the furthest seats from the noise.

E is for Exhibitions! #HumanitiesLibraryA-Z

We’ve got exciting exhibition space on both the first and ground floors, right outside the library entrances – this season is focused on ‘The Humanities in the 1930s’. Perfect for browsing, particularly if you show up early for our 9am opening. 😊

#Halloween is here! 👻🎃

Our spooky help desk is always available to answer your most terrifying questions, like ‘where is this book?’ or ‘why can’t I find somewhere to sit?’. There'll always be at least one member of staff here and happy to help! (Unseen here, but we're usually corporeal, promise!)

D is for Dictionaries! #HumanitiesLibraryA-Z

Want a more #darkacademia aesthetic than searching terms on the web? We’ve got hard copies of reference works on our 1st and 2nd floors! Head to the western side of the main reading spaces – ‘Dictionaries 1’ or ‘Dictionaries 2’ on SOLO. Bill for scale.

Heads up for our readers! Engineers are currently hard at work repairing our book gates; no longer will they beep at random times! Thank you for bearing with us while we make the library even better for you (the library is still fully accessible in the meantime).

You said, we did!
• Gate entry noises (except alarms)=off on both floors!
• Height-adjustable Quick Search machine=available!
• Shelf-ends for books=progressing!
• Two sets of piano headphones=in place!
• Monitors spread out=done!
Please keep the post-its and opinions coming; it really helps!

Introducing our ✨first ever✨ display!

Examining the developments in Film, Literature, Medicine, Music, Philosophy, and Theology during the turbulent 1930s, it references events such as WWII, The Great Depression, and the Harlem Renaissance, making it especially topical for #BlackHistoryMonth!

Historically, our collections would indeed have used an in-house classification system! Nowadays though, LCC works well for its breadth and simplicity 😊

C is for classification! #HumanitiesLibraryA-Z

We use the Library of Congress Classification System at the Humanities Library! 🏛️

This means that each item is organised by subject using a combination of letters and numbers. See this handy poster for further detail on how the system is broken down!

B is for books! #HumanitiesLibraryA-Z

We heard a rumour that the Humanities Library has no books in it... and we're delighted to tell you that this is NOT TRUE 🚫

Our library houses over 110,000 books on the open shelves! 📚 And that's not even mentioning our CDs, DVDs, or music scores...

#OTD in 1854, Oscar Wilde was born!

We've got plenty of books by (and about!) him waiting here in the library, if you feel like celebrating his birthday 🎂🥳📖

Do you want a ✨library tour?✨

We're hosting tours for returning* students and staff every day this week at 11:30am and 2pm. No need to book, just turn up!

*New students and staff also welcome, if you missed our introductory tours last week!

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit! 📚

Have you borrowed a book for the vacation?

Bill, Beethoven, and Lanfranc would like to remind you that vacation loans are due back on Tuesday 14th October!

All usual Bodleian lending policies apply: www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/services/bor...

We couldn't possibly leave him behind! 😊
