This would've been perfect. The post OT shows have done a great job at portraying a New Republic that, while better than the Empire, is very rigid and flawed, more-so than even the prior Grand Republic
Make the entire plot of the trilogy that the new Republic is embracing fascism in an effort to keep the galaxy "safe". Make the whole thing about the war on terror and have all your characters in conflict over which sides they're taking.

The infuriating thing about this book is now I have to go tell everyone to read it. I'm going to be that guy at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers — running out into traffic, trying to tell passing drivers that the best science fiction novel this year is about Star Wars and it deserves a Hugo
