Trump (1) reveals he doesn't know what habeas corpus is and (2) punts to Noem, who famously revealed her own ignorance at a Senate hearing when she defined habeas corpus as "a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country."

Q: Have you given any more thought to possibly suspending habeas corpus?

TRUMP: Suspending who?

Q: Habeas corpus

TRUMP: I don't know. I'd rather leave that to Kristi.

I signed onto this letter with NABJ-Chicago and a coalition of other journalism organizations because it’s imperative that our rights as reporters are not violated. Arresting and committing violence against journalists is an attack on truth and transparency.

Law enforcement needs to rein in ICE's anti-press abuses and investigate ICE attacks on independent journalists in Chicagoland.

A coalition of Chicago and national press freedom orgs explained why in a letter to the Broadview Police Department and Illinois State Police today.
Independent journalists must be protected from ICE attacks
Letter calls on local authorities to investigate all attacks on journalists

Living in a society without guardrails, no independence from federal justice, and the rule of law on its last leg is disorienting. Abuses of power are escalating at a rapid pace. It’s important as neighbors that you help local newsrooms out by recording what you see.

RAJU: You swore in 2 GOP members during pro forma session. Why not swear in Grijalva? Does it have to do w/her signature on Epstein petition?

JOHNSON: It has nothing to do with that. We'll swear her in when everybody is back

R: Why not now?

J: Uh - we'll schedule it, I guess, as soon as she wants

WGA Statement on ABC’s Decision to Pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The right to speak our minds and to disagree with each other - to disturb, even - is at the very heart of what it means to be a free people. It is not to be denied. Not by violence, not by the abuse of governmental power, nor by acts of corporate cowardice.
As a Guild, we stand united in opposition to anyone who uses their power and influence to silence the voices of writers, or anyone who speaks in dissent. If free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn't have bothered to write it into the Constitution. What we have signed on to - painful as it may be at times - is the freeing agreement to disagree.
Shame on those in government who forget this founding truth. As for our employers, our words have made you rich.
Silencing us impoverishes the whole world.
The WA stands with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers.

I regret to inform you that in order to understand the Jimmy Kimmel situation you may have to familiarize yourself with very boring things like a broadcast station megamerger and FCC ownership rules. I wrote about the Nextar-Tegna deal last month www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...
The $6.2 billion deal that could reshape local TV across America
Indianapolis residents will see three of its biggest local stations under the same company if the FCC allows the biggest owner of local stations to buy another group.

Trump FCC Chair Brendan Carr on ABC: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way… There’s actions we can take on licensed broadcasters. It’s long past the time ..Disney say ‘We’re not gonna run Kimmel anymore… because we licensed broadcasters are running the possibly of fines or license revocation”

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips announces he has taken a buyout and the Trib is eliminating his post. Unless I am missing someone I believe this leaves the nation's third-largest city without a single full-time film writing gig.

When fans talk about missing the old Chance "it strips away the fact that we’re all human. ... Each one of these [albums] are steps in my life, where it’s all cumulative.”
