“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known"🧠🌌-CS
A contemplation: If medicine is described as science and practice of health, then aren’t wellness practices also medicine for health? Or is it just 💊. 🤔

Just as stress affects the whole brain+body, nutrition, exercise, connection (self and others) and rest (sleep and meditation) affects the whole brain and body even under dis-ease! #holistichealth #brainbody

Such a pleasure meeting Dr. Kevin Tracey, hearing his talk, and discussing the #vagusnerve. Grateful he signed The Great Nerve in my office with Vesalius’ vagus illustration behind us! The vagus is central to our lab’s work, and my yoga teaching on parasympathetic regulation. 🙏

Beautiful memories made with the amazing @sofiyahupalo.bsky.social 🙏✨
I had a fabulous time learning about new science and spending quality time with my favorite people at #ACNP2026. Until next time!

With so much suffering, pain, and sadness arising, are we practicing our innate capacity for love+compassion, than indifference/division?

How Consciousness Works: From Sleep to Self-Awareness
Human consciousness intertwines awareness and self-recognition, diverging in meaning among neuroscientists and philosophers. It encompasses states like wakefulness, sleep, and alertness, influenced by physiological processes. The exploration of consciousness includes understanding sleep's restorative functions and self-awareness's role in interactions, highlighting the balance between scientific and moral aspects of human experience.

Health and healing are always holistic! Science itself shows the importance of nutrition, exercise, rest and connection as fundamental not only for disease prevention, but also for facilitating the process of healing and recovery under disease! #brainbody

I want to share this research was inspired by me-search: everyday yoga practice that involves breathing and meditation and contemplation on biology of mind-breath-body connection! 🙏🧘‍♀️

With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

Excited to share new work from our lab showing, for the first time, a link between breathing dysregulation, stress responses, and energy metabolism via a neuropeptide receptor mechanism.

This opens new ways of understanding #brainbody interactions!

Disruption of Pre-Bötzinger Complex neuropeptidergic tonality controls fear and metabolic response
Stress profoundly impacts systemic metabolism, yet the central circuits linking stress responses to peripheral metabolic regulation remain poorly defined. Here, we identify the preBötzinger complex (p...

Happy Winter Solstice & World Meditation Day. Meditation is simple yet profound. In a world pulling us in many directions, it brings us back to awareness. Not about becoming something new, but recognizing what’s always here. Resting in awareness settles the mind+nervous system 🙏

Does pounding of your heart makes you feel afraid, or does the feeling of fear cause your heart to race?

The Cannon-Bard and James-Lange theories have shaped a century of debate about emotion and physiology.

Biologically, the brain and body dialogue is dynamic, continuous, and bi-directional!

Some spiritual traditions believe the 'self' as a coherent, enduring entity to be an illusion, there is also a tangible 'bodily self' that forms the basis of this notion through somatosensation.

The #brain is often viewed as rather separate from the rest of body. One way it is separated somewhat is the BBB — the blood-brain-barrier.

The blood–brain barrier
Here, Audrey Chagnot and Axel Montagne discuss the structural and functional features of the blood–brain barrier and the association of its disruption with various pathologies.
