Honestly, I do believe you can have a "generically nice hero" as your protagonist, if you have a setting which is more nihilistic-
Treating their kindness as a weakness, or accusing it as an act to look good.
Sometimes people are good, and that's all what we need in the world.

But I goddamn respect the series for creating such a big, lived-in and deep world, with different countries, cultures and politics. It's unique & inspiring how theyve managed that.

A reason why Jaune from #RWBY invited so much hate initially was that he pretty much came out of nowhere, yet still getting his own (bad) arc in the series b4 all of the main characters got proper characterization-
Didnt help one of the writers voiced him, which felt like favouritism/self insert-y.
