34,000 signing up for this work AFTER seeing their fellow citizens gunned down by federal thugs in cold blood? I'm chugging whatever the opposite of doomerism is
More than 34,000 Minnesotans signed up to be trained as ICED observers with various activist groups in recent weeks, many of them since Jan. 7, when a federal agent shot and killed Renée Good.
Thousands of new ICE watchers hit the streets after two killings
Minnesotans outraged by the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti have signed up in large numbers to monitor and protest ICE with other activists.

Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have reportedly told Daniel Rosen, Trump’s appointee to lead the Minneapolis office, they might resign en masse, leaving the office to crumble under the weight of the unattended workload.

At least one has already resigned. trib.al/GWbAVQ5

The Save Act wld “require Americans to provide a birth certificate, passport, or other citizenship document to register or re-register to vote.” It does *not* say that women who took their spouses’ last names can use a marriage certificate in combo w/ a birth certificate to prove their citizenship.
The GOP blames women for undermining them on issues like abortion & ICE & thus hopes to pass the “SAVE Act,” which will make it harder for married women who changed their last names to vote. But they want you to think it’s about “election integrity”. 1/31/26 #HandmaidsTale 1/

Minnesota's response is among the most beautiful examples of real-life antifascism I have ever seen. And it’s why, as deeply horrifying as these last few weeks have been, I am actually optimistic about the survival of American democracy. — TNR's Aaron Regunberg.

Party leaders can’t seem to process that Trump’s policies are in fact staggeringly unpopular. Minneapolis is showing politicians how it’s done.

When “Infinite Jest” appeared, in 1996, it was more than a best-seller; it was a phenomenon, a widespread, must-read accessory and experience. It’s become a cultural punch line—but it continues to offer pleasures and lessons for readers. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/P3f2zZ
“Infinite Jest” Has Turned Thirty. Have We Forgotten How to Read It?
David Foster Wallace’s novel, in all its immensity, became the subject of sanctification and then scorn. But the work rewards the attention it demands.

NEW: Trump’s approval among Catholics falls to a historic low.

A rising movement of Catholics, emboldened by Pope Leo, is turning against MAGA.

With over 20,000 members, we are the fastest-growing Catholic group in America.

To the MAGA purveyors of cruelty and lies — we will defeat you.
Under Pope Leo XIV, American Catholics Are Uniting to Defeat MAGA Authoritarianism
Trump’s support among U.S. Catholics has plummeted to an all-time low of 39%, a stark decline over the year. This is no accident. Under Leo XIV, we're working to defeat Trump-Vance authoritarianism.

Unmarked car, no lights or police insignia. Masked armed men leap out. Victim not in the act of committing any crime. This is not how a serious federal law enforcement agency acts in a free society.

How is this not supposed to be a “right wing paramilitary force loyal to the regime”?
This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

March 3, 2025: Bondi says she has a "truckload" of new Epstein evidence she will make public ...
Yes, this friendly 2019 Jeffrey Epstein email exchange is about the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft. But it's more important who it is WITH: Brad Karp, the chairman of Paul, Weiss. And Karp was still chairman when Paul, Weiss became the first law firm to cave to Trump's demands in 2025. 1/

US democratic backsliding looks very fast if you mark the start at 2025. But it’s been going since 2017, so I disagree with
@donmoyn.bsky.social @jburnmurdoch.ft.com etc.

Abuse of emergency powers, normalization of bribery, de facto death of War Powers Act all term 1.

Immunity case in the interim.
New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. 🧵

I witnessed ICE using tear gas on children.

They shattered a window of low-income housing where a disabled vet lives. He got gassed in his own home.
This was the kind of treatment the union activists got today from Oregon’s largest unions alongside coalitions like @jwjpdx.bsky.social. They fired projectiles and injured many demonstrators and broke out neighbors windows. Gas for a half dozen miles in each direction. #iceout

Union-backed Dem Taylor Rehmet nearly pulled off a stunning upset in November — almost winning a deep-red TX Senate seat over two billionaire-funded Republicans. He's now in a runoff with a fixture of the Texas far right. My latest, from Tarrant County, a bellwether and hub of Christian nationalism:
In Tarrant County, a Hub for the Far Right, a Democrat Seeks a Major Upset
In a runoff election for Texas Senate District 9, which has not elected a Democrat since 1991, Taylor Rehmet is betting his pro-labor message can flip disillusioned voters.
