“After a period of psychiatric hospital closures and investment in community support, Pennsylvania has shifted focus to the most restrictive care possible…for people who have been put at risk in an ill-equipped justice system, for actions that in many cases could have been prevented with care.”
While you're all here, if you want to read some actual journalism, this is the second story in my series about the collapse of the mental health care system in Pennsylvania. I'm really proud of it.

This is some excellent reporting. These kids deserve better. The staff deserves better. Leadership needs to be better.

Screams and bangs echoed inside Ohio’s largest youth residential treatment center. Some children rushed outside to grab rocks. A teacher ushered her students into the cafeteria for safety.

Another teacher texted her mother, pleading with her to call 911: “Call them. Call mom please.”

Ohio's largest youth treatment center, a 110-bed facility on the edge of a state forest, has become a locus of chaos over the past year. Kids are hurt and cause hurt. Staff are told not to call 911. Community members are confused and concerned. Stunning work from @brittanyhailer.bsky.social.
