This is Sue’s story. But it could be the story of any of the roughly half a dozen families I spoke to for this investigation.

And it’s the story of what failure over three decades means for real people, a mother and son.
The tragic consequences of PA's failed mental health system
One family's story reveals the human cost of hospital closures, funding cuts, and the resulting failures in Pennsylvania's mental health care system.

fellas, is a tidy narrative to say it's bad to cut a journalist into pieces with a bone saw?

I love the library. The passport guy is kindly, but firmly, going "No! No, no, no, no, no." into the phone. People are flipping through the actual, physical newspaper. A guy is learning how to read behind me. The sun is hitting the free plant exchange in the windowsill just so. It rocks!

Emmanuel, a 15-year-old with intellectual disabilities, wandered away from his mom’s fruit stand in October.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.

I know a lot has happened this year, but I do think we moved on too quickly from the pope throwing a Clipse concert.
He said "Amen" straight into the drop

Lmao Pope Leo threw a rave for an archbishop's 75th birthday this is kind of incredible

I have a question. Are one lane bridges a thing outside Pennsylvania?

I’m talking about little bridges over a stream or something, and a two lane road narrows to one lane over the bridge, so all the cars have to alternate.

I assume this is only a thing here because Pennsylvania is a fake place.

If you too would like the burden of understanding this hed/subbed combo, can’t recommend Wild Faith by @swordsjew.bsky.social enough!
Mike Pence wrote an opinion piece for Fox News. Reading the headline, I was like, "Okay, seems like a normal take."

Then I read the subheadline and... bro, what?

Reading this was so cathartic and clarifying. Marisa is a gift.

We've gotta hold the line even when it feels like there's no point.

A lot of people didn’t like the Washington Post journalist who was tortured and dismembered with a bone saw for writing critically about the man sitting next to me
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

While you're all here, if you want to read some actual journalism, this is the second story in my series about the collapse of the mental health care system in Pennsylvania. I'm really proud of it.
What happened to PA's promise of community mental health care
After a period of psychiatric hospital closures and investment in community support, Pennsylvania has shifted focus to the most restrictive care possible.

not to be the most annoying person alive, but i feel like it's my duty as the only member of my family who is not a nurse to say: you don't have a "v-fib flare-up"

v-fib is just...dying

like, if he did have a v-fib rhythm, he could be shocked back but

extremely weird way to say this

Ohio's largest youth treatment center, a 110-bed facility on the edge of a state forest, has become a locus of chaos over the past year. Kids are hurt and cause hurt. Staff are told not to call 911. Community members are confused and concerned. Stunning work from @brittanyhailer.bsky.social.
How an Ohio Youth Treatment Center Tried to End Escalating Violence

I did it because the government isn’t.
