Income and wealth inequality aren’t just making the rich richer — they’re slowing productivity and growth across Canada.

Simone Mao explains how in Perspectives Journal – Issue no. 4:
🔗 perspectivesjournal.ca/stagnation-t...
A chart titled “FIGURE 3 – Share of Market Income Held by the Top 1 Percent of Earners, Canada and the United States, 1913–2012” is shown. It illustrates how the top 1% share of market income declined during the mid-20th century and then rose sharply starting in the 1980s. Three lines represent:
- Solid white line: Top 1% income share in the U.S.
- Dashed white line: Top 1% income share in Canada
- Solid pinkish line: Top 1% income share in Canada (LAD)

The y-axis shows the percentage of market income held by the top 1%, ranging from 0% to 20%. The x-axis spans from 1913 to 2012. All lines show a sharp decline from the 1930s to 1970s, followed by a significant rise from the 1980s onward, especially in the U.S. The background is dark purple, with white and pink text. A large quote reads:
“After declining under mid-century Keynesian policies, the share of market income held by the top 1 percent has surged since the 1980s.”
