the fun thing about working in small market news is I have hundreds of bylines like this and there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm Eric Wickham!
There are actually just 10 real people on the entire Internet in Canada, four of whom are you, me, @ericwickham.ca and Wyatt Claypool

The rest are just sock puppet accounts and Facebook pages run by Jeff Ballingall

It's incredible how difficult *not doing something* is for some people.

I gained around 2000 followers last year by posting my stories on platforms other than twitter. It can be daunting to start over, but it's 100% worth it to get away from that cesspit.
So we have government saying journalists are using X, and journalists saying governments are using X. Both of which are true, but neither of which *needs* to be true. Things can change! We can have better things!
More recently, I had the chance, in a committee hearing, to raise the issue of the CBC’s commitment to X. Here’s what CBC’s top executives told me about why the CBC isn’t on Bluesky or Mastodon. youtu.be/lJUeQZlvD-E?... #cdnpoli

If you think your grocery bill has risen the past year, I am sorry to say it almost definitely has.

I think if we were able to drum up the same amount of moral panic for a housing crisis that has lasted most of my adult life as we do when Canada gets bronze in the world juniors, we'd be better off as a country.

Had a dream yesterday that I was being chased and bitten by goats and none of you helped.

So much for community I guess

I wrote something for Spacing, in response to renewed calls for "subways subways subways."

OP-ED: Toronto transit needs to build on what we have, not fall for old tropes - Spacing Toronto
Transit planning is a long-term endeavour, not a one-time project with a single solution. In a municipal election year, we need to demand more from leaders and those charged with planning and running ...

This place needs some Innocuous Discourse pronto. Quote this with a take that’s not political or aggressive

The worst days working from home in a one-bedroom apt are when you have the slow cooker going. I am so hungry and still have 3.5 hours to go. It smells so good in here!

whoever told marketers the way to start making more relatable online content is by lowering production value is wild.

I promise it's not the cameras you're using, I just don't want to watch a ketchup ad.

The best way to navigate stormy waters, as every non-landlubber knows, is to agree with everything the ocean is doing.

Stackoverflow is the reason I survived my first year as a dev, it taught me how to think critically and modify solutions that weren't exactly what I needed to fix problems with my own code.

It was such a useful resource, and I worry about new junior devs

Canada's number #1 export is ratboys that play hockey.
Canada’s junior hockey team and its unsportsmanlike captain, Porter Martone, behaved like spoiled brats during this tournament

Congratulations Czechia

I find hyper-individualism fascinating when it comes to religion. It's like some people are trying to take the "common" out of "the common good."

Being a part of something larger was the central point of going to church for me growing up.
I think Mamdani really hit a nerve with the reactionaries this time. Absolute crack pipe take to say that the sacraments of the Church are individualistic. Not a single one of the sacraments is individualistic. Hell is full of individuals though.

Agree with him or not, you have to admit that Leatherface knows his way around a chainsaw.
the most braindead kind of take in these situations. we've had the unquestioned power to turn most countries into glass parking lots for most of our lifetimes. who on earth is still impressed by this?

It must be Mr Musk's incredible business acumen that allows him to lose a 100m dash with an 8 second head start.
A company that's been locked out of major markets like the US and Canada has ridden its habit of "making good cars" to the pinnacle of the EV business, while Tesla, with full access and subsides everywhere, is declining due to its "an asshole company that makes bad cars for assholes" strategy.
Tesla Loses Its EV Crown to BYD as Sales Keep Dropping
Full-year electric vehicle sales figures have dropped for 2025, revealing China’s BYD is now officially global top dog.
