Usually when I want to draw I work on my book or just doodle, I have a hard time coming up with ideas for illustrations (I really overthink them). But I felt I needed some relaxing drawing time. It was nice to just draw something pretty.

Why is it common to hear something along the lines of: “Comics are confusing. I couldn’t figure out how to read them” when you suggest one

Figure it out?? Kids are shamed for wanting to read comics over prose because it’s not seen as “actual reading”

So why is it so hard for so many adults 🙄

Speculative Fiction and Faith

Whether we're raised with or simply exposed to religious ideologies, their doctrines can shade our lives in unexpected ways. In Anna Meyer's Saint Catherine, a young woman skips Catholic mass for the first time and wrestles with demonic possession in a coming-of-age story that finds her questioning her piety and agency. Mattie Lubchansky's dystopian satire, Simplicity, follows Lucius Pasternak, a scholar and trans man, who is enlisted to research the secluded community (or cult) of Simplicity, and finds more than he bargains for. And Damian Duffy visualizes the story of a faith-based community yearning for the stars beyond their dystopian surroundings in his and John Jennings' graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler's science fiction classic, Parable of the Talents. Join moderator Sharon Lee De La Cruz to discuss the intersection of dogma, imagination, and creation.
