i'm really curious about how AI has changed hiring practices in tech. at my old job, we had a take-home coding task, and it was a really good signal. it would be useless now.

any asshole can make a little sign on printer paper, but it takes a special kind of asshole to commission a professionally-printed, luxurious "debate me" table skirt

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

i have some hearing loss from working construction in my youth, and i'm interested in the new, nearly invisible hearing aids on the market now.

but, the hearing aids can now connect to bluetooth, and i am also tempted by the ability to surreptitiously listen to media like martha well's murderbot

(i don't actually want to listen to that music again. i don't think i can handle the nostalgia. i just wanted to use it as a reality check)

but my point is not that *couldn't* really capture what a scene sounded like, but that you definitely can't from what's on a streaming service.

whpk would also definitely had recordings too, whpk was a center of that.

but to answer you question, bands played at the cove, the sutherland, reynolds club, ida noyes. some of those bands got to the point where they were playing empty bottle, double door, and fireside bowl.

i suspect that it wouldn't actually be too hard to track these down.

would be a great idea for a radio show though.
February 8, 2026 at 12:55 AM
and there are no recordings of any of those bands on the commercial streaming services.

and it realized that it was utterly foolish to think that you could capture the kind of thing a scene is from what got recorded and continues to circulate commercially.

i've been putting together playlists of music scenes--the conceit that this would be what you would hear if were going to shows in a particular time and place.

but then i tried to put together a playlist for a scene i knew first hand, a small efflorescence in hyde park in the mid 2000s.

i tried on my grandfathers overcoat and the silhouette of this thing is so particular.

i'd love to read about how designers for period dramas navigate costumes that look of their period but are pleasing to contemporary fashion sense.
