If an enemy of America seized America, they would be doing what Trump and his minions are doing…

…destroying democracy and pillaging America.

The people put an enemy in charge.
Wish me luck on the persimmon and pomegranate sauce for the duck breasts. Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m going to feel like a big fat Black Swallowtail caterpillar after Thanksgiving dinner.

The Orange Sulphur butterfly has a Thanksgiving cooking tip for you.

Be sure to cut those Brussels Sprouts in half or shred them to release the bad tasting Sulfur. I prefer the shredded hash method with some shallots and finished with some pomegranate seeds.

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you and your loved ones. Extending well wishes to our foreign friends as well. I’m thankful for you.

Trying to be organized on the meal prep with a list for a change. Duck goes on first to go very low and slow to render out that duck fat to get a nice crispy skin.

Butterfly Season 2025

The Black Swallowtail was prolific this year. I took almost 1,700 photos of them.

To distinguish sex, the male has a bold 2nd row of yellow, and the female usually has more blue on her hindwings. 🖤💛💙🧡

Photo order: Male, Female, Caterpillar

I took almost 1,300 Pipevine Swallowtail photos this year. Hard to pick a favorite. This is one of my favorites.

I snapped 1,086 Monarch photos in 2025, about 400 more than last year. Don’t confuse photos with population levels. It’s not a scientific survey. I would say that I simply got more carried away this year. 😁

Love this photo from Halloween. 🧡

Big 4 black Swallowtails in the Eastern U.S.

Photo and size order
Black form female Tiger (largest)

The underside of the hindwings is telling. Spicebush has blue swoosh thru the orange; Black has solid row of orange.

As I review this past butterfly season on BlueSky, I am sifting through my favorites and finding new ones to post among the 15,000 photos in 2025.

I hadn’t posted this one of Spicebush Swallowtail mates in flight. Male chasing the female. 💙

So exciting and nerve wracking.

Heading home from college.

Our daughter is taking her first Uber alone and then flying alone for the first time today, with a connection through Chicago. I know it is good for her to expand her independence, but I won’t quite relax until we pick her up at midnight.

I created a logo in July for my butterfly photo postings. I believe this was the first photo that I used it.

Pearl Crescent butterfly on wild Milkweed in our upper meadow. Love that tiny, metallic green UFI (unidentified flying insect).

While not a butterfly (obviously), this photo of a Firefly was one of my favorites this year. I definitely struggled to get the macro lens close enough and in focus for the evening light show. Got lucky on this one.
