Adam hid in the shadows, his hoodie haphazardly on the floor behind him. He couldn’t let it slow him down. He’d even given his bow and arrows to Casey, though he was seriously hoping Casey would not try to use those, as he would most definitely use them all wrong, like they were baseball bats or something. At least his quiver was big enough to be able to hide his actual bat in it. Casey didn’t need to use the bow anyway, this was just for show.

He turned his head towards the duo next to him. With the helmets and hoodies, on top of the shellcycle, they looked exactly like they needed to. Hopefully.

They gave him a thumbs up, and he sent the message to April to reconnect his shellcell to the previous connection. Except, as part of the plan, Mickey would be the one connecting. The moment he was, Adam looked at his map. As they had hoped, the phones were still operational, though most likely under the Foot’s control by now.

They only connected for a few seconds before leaving, to avoid any risks of being hacked, but it was enough to spot two clear dots in the middle of the river a few miles down. Casey wasted no time in turning the shellcycle around, Mickey behind him, and driving quickly towards it.

Adam remained behind. The Foot were expecting him to be on board of the red cycle alongside Mickey. Humans were not good swimmers, so they wouldn’t even expect Casey to come. They might not even remember him. Which was why he needed to be there.

Because Adam was an excellent underwater swimmer.

“Ah, just look at those cute little toes!” He exclaimed. He poked one of Paolo’s toes. “Four little chubby round toes. Aaaaand a one! And… a two!”

He poked his second one, making Paolo twitch his leg excitedly.

“And….”

Mikey’s finger wiggled in the air. Paolo huffed, his eyes laser focused on it. Even though he knew it was coming, it still took him by surprise when Mikey finally poked it.

“…a three!” Mikey cheered. “And…… wait for it…… here it comes…… anyday now…”

Paolo twitched his leg in apprehension, moving it in and out of the way of Mikey’s threatening finger. Now? No, not yet. How about now? Noooo. Then mayb-

“Four!”

Paolo huffed and puffed, his entire body a ball of energy. Mikey smooched his face on Paolo’s plastron, tickling him and giving him lots of kissies. Oh, Paolo just loved it!

Casey sneaked around the building, heading for the closest window to the corridor he needed. He waited for an opening before slapping the window open, sliding through it.

“Eh, look at me, Raph.” He mumbled. “I’m actin’ like a real ninja ‘n shit right n- woah!”

The bottom of his pants caught the edge of the window, and he face-planted onto the floor tiles, loudly and clumsily.

A real ninja.

“What?” One of the purple dragons obviously noticed. “Hey, it’s that fucking vigilante!”

“What’s he doin’ here?” Another asked. “We’ve got ‘nough bullshit to deal with right now. Just get rid o’ him ‘lready!”

“Ah, snap.” Casey complained.

“Well, I uh… At least you got to have a real life for a few months…” Mickey told him, clearly thinking alike.

Adam churred in response. He wished he could’ve told them just how much that life had meant for him, even if it had been short.

If they died now, would April and Casey raise Ellie for him? Would she grow up, learning that life had not been kind to her father and uncles? That being a mutant turtle was harsh, and that reality was even more cruel to them than others? Or would April and Casey lie to her, giving her fairy tale stories about the great but short life her mutant family had had? Maybe they wouldn’t even mention them to her, and Ellie would spend the rest of her life thinking she was the only mutant turtle to ever exist, alone in a world that would only wish for her death and suffering if they knew she existed.

As a tonfa hit him at the back of the head, and he went tumbling down on top of Don, he stared at his too pale face. He’d really failed everyone, hadn’t he? Whether it’d been his fault or not didn’t matter. Even if he’d done all he could’ve, the fact was that he’d failed them all.

He’d failed them all.

His eyes closed, and he couldn’t find the inner strength to open them anymore. He’d been fighting nonstop for over a day, and he just couldn’t do it anymore when he knew now of the outcome. He wondered how many people tended to die, full of regrets like he was right now. Would his family ever forgive him? Would his little one think of him as a failed hero, who tried his best? Or as a turtle who was weak, unable to do his primary objective.

Maybe both.

He opened the lights before looking around the room. The door was closed, and he wasn’t sure he was allowed out of it. Don had talked about getting a new schedule, so he searched what he could do for it. He ended up making his way to the wardrobe. He slid one of the drawers open before pulling out different clothing pieces. He finally found one he liked, so he moved out of the now cluttered region. He placed his clothes on the floor before pausing.

…He didn’t actually know how to put them on…

It was only two pieces, it should be easy enough, right?

He picked one up. He knew that his head and arms went through the holes, so he shoved himself in it. Wait, was this right? It felt off compared to usual, but what did he know? He slid to the floor to try pushing further. This hole was really long! He just needed… a little… further…

Oh shell, he was stuck now.

He managed to get one arm just barely sticking out of one of the holes, but his head was completely stuck in another, leaving his second arm squished between the fabric and his plastron. He wiggled and turned on the floor to try and get free, his feet scrambling through the carpet, but he was well and truly stuck. He huffed and grunted while rolling around on the floor in vain.

Some chuckles made him pause. They were quickly covered by a throat clearing.

“Good morning.” Leo greeted him. “You seem stuck. Do you need any help?”

Paolo huffed. Unfortunately…

“Can you fight?” He asked Mickey.

“Yeah.”

He pulled out a shuriken. Mickey grabbed his arm.

“Wait. The camera, it’s moving, right?” Mickey asked. “Maybe we could get under it and take the guards out, since they’re right under it. Unless it’s aimed at them?”

Adam took another look. The camera was indeed filming more the corridors than the entrance itself. It would be tight, but it was worth a shot. Destroying it would sound the alarm anyway, so now they only risked being seen on it. It was worth the risk.

Adam hugged the wall. He turned to Mickey and started a countdown with one of his hands, synchronized with the camera’s angle.

3… 2… 1…

“Adam, Mickey, can you hear me?” April asked through the earpiece.

“Loud and clear, April.” Mickey replied as they drove off. “You know where you’re going, Adam?”

Adam confirmed. He’d checked the map before leaving.

“The place is almost completely out in the open.” April told them. “It will be hard for you to sneak in. There’s a sewer path underneath it, but more than likely…”

“It’ll be protected.” Mickey finished for her. “Man, I wish we had Leo for this. None of us are good with plans. Uh, no offense.”

No, Mickey was right. He was terrible at those.

“So what do you intend on doing once there?” April asked.

“Me and Adam actually talked about this during our meal.” Mickey replied. “The others have a collar, but if we can break it, then they would only be controlled for another fifteen minutes. So, I don’t know how we’re gonna get to them, but once we do, we break the collars and wait for the timer to run out. At least, that’s the plan…”

“If the Foot was also collecting samples, then maybe you should also destroy them.” April pointed out.

“…Right.” Mickey acknowledged. “Like we aren’t already way in over our heads as it is…”
