On a dumpster was a container of something fishy. No, but like, literally fishy. It was freshly made and still hot, its fumes evaporating in the air. The small plastic box of food was open, its top under it. Next to it were a few containers of some other type of foods she couldn’t smell from there. This… was unusual… But also… she was starving, and the thought of having an actual meal, something actually warm and fresh to fill her stomach… It was making her drool through her muzzle, her stomach loud and incessant. Foooood… She was juggling between her desperation for sustenance and the precautions about dangers and weird stuff that had kept her and her babies safe until now. As she paced on the edge of the shadows, seeking for any way to grab the meal without stepping into the light, she lifted her head up. She could’ve sworn she heard some soft whispers, but wherever she looked, there was nothing more than buildings and street items. She strained her ears for a few minutes, but there was nothing else. Maybe it was just a rat or something? Finally, her stomach growled loudly enough to decide for her. As carefully as possible, she made her way closer to the meal. She looked all around, making extra sure she was indeed alone and safe. As she quietly walked closer, the smell seemed to hook her and pull her closer. She stopped in front of it.

“Waaaaeeeeoon!” Ellie exclaimed, regaining their attention while waving her plastic ring in the air. “Oh, I’m sorry, lil dudette. Were we ignoring you for too long?” Mickey asked as he poked her nose for emphasis. “Kya!” Ellie yelped, falling back down and rubbing her snout as if he’d just attacked her. “Hehe.” Raph chuckled. He pinched the water in the kiddie pool, sending freckles of it her way. Ellie swung her arms around, tossing water at anyone she saw. Mickey replied by creating ripples in the water, and she soon started running around the pool to try and dodge the evil sharks and the submarine and the fingers after her. She was cornered! She slapped the water in front of her, taking out at least two fingers! Then she kicked the mean shark away with an awesome flop. The submarine stood no chance as she collapsed onto it, her plastron locking it to the floor. She stole the toy for herself, using it to defeat the remaining hands after her. “Noooooo, betrayaaaaaaal!” Mickey whined, holding the wrist of his beaten hand dramatically. “You treacherous shellsub! How could you!” “I think it was bribed.” Don replied with a head shake. “Traitor.” “Aaaaaaaaah!” Ellie cheered, waving her arms in the air with her prize. Adam tossed her in the air a few times for her victory. “And the winner is: Ellie!” Mickey added. “He’s your crown, you lil princess.” He placed the plastic ring onto her head. “Aaappfffff!” Ellie replied. She was quick to pick the ring and stuff as much as she could inside her mouth. “Some people just can’t understand precious jewelry.” Mickey lamented. “You were so fabulous with it!” Ellie blew a raspberry in his face.

“Ya jus’ had ta ruin da surprise, don’t ya?” Raph complained to Mickey. “What do you mean? The surprise is still there. I mean I didn’t tell him that you-” Raph slapped his hand on Mickey’s mouth. “Don’t say a word.” He warned him. Mickey’s grin was visible even through the hand. Raph suddenly recoiled, moving his hand away from him like he’d been burnt. “Did ya jus’ lick me?” Mickey mimed that he’d been quiet. Raph squinting his eyes angrily at him only made him smirk more. “So are we getting this dessert or are we only bickering about it for another hour?” Don asked. “Oh, we were waiting for you to finish your last bite.” Mickey waved at his plate. “Gotta be polite you know.” “Says da guy who licks people’s hands.” Raph argued. “Says the guy who places his hands where they can be licked.” Mickey countered.

“Raph??” He blinked his eyes open. He hadn’t noticed that his body was heavily leaning against the wall now, and he hadn’t been moving in way too many minutes. If Don hadn’t called his name, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t have passed out right then and there. “Hey.” He responded, the only sound he managed to get out of his mouth. “Don’t ‘hey’ us!” Mikey complained. “We’ve been searching for you all night! What happened?” He quickly made his way to him, checking his wounds. Raph let Don and Leo hold his weight as he was pretty much dragged to the battle shell. The blood loss must finally be getting to him, because he suddenly reopened his eyes inside the van, already on his back and his makeshift bandages removed. “Why’d you try patching your wounds with silk? You know that’s not gonna work.” Mikey asked. “…W’sn’t me…” He slurred in answered. “Well, I can already see we’re gonna need treads and a blood bag.” Mikey listed. “And you are gonna stay in bed until I can say for sure that you’re not gonna pass out again.” He started turning around to gather some materials. Raph grabbed his wrist to stop him. “Wait, Mike, we can’t leave yet.” He told him. “Raph, you’re too severely wounded.” Don argued. “No, listen. I… I saw someone… ‘nother turtle, jus’ like us.” He tried to explain. “She had them babies with her, ‘n she had a cat she was feeding it dead rats, ‘n a muzzle on her face, like a dog. She liked ma bandana…” He listed off.

The time had finally come. The gifts were ready, the desserts done. It was time to start this. Today felt like a blueberry day, or a… sky day, or water, or blue cheese… Alright, admittedly, Adam did not know that many things that were blue. But the sentiment was there. He’d slept horribly the night before, so it was no surprise when he was awoken by a gentle hand rubbing at his cheek. He peeled his eyes open to see the turtle of the day smiling softly at him. He stretched with a yawn before sitting back up and rubbing at his eyes. “Time?” He signed to Leo. Leo nodded in confirmation. Adam tiredly moved to hug him as a non-verbal happy birthday gesture. He may have been dozing off while doing it, because Leo eventually chuckled at him as he patted his head. “Don’t fall back asleep on me now.” He warned. Oh, right. Adam finally let him go with another yawn.

“Mickey! What are you doing with that box?” They suddenly heard Don yell from the first floor as the elevator door opened and out came the orange turtle. “Ah! Oh, hi Don…” Mickey sheepishly replied. “What, this? She slipped inside, replacing the entrance. She patted her poor empty stomach, making it growl and vibrate through her plastron. She once again wrapped herself around her eggs, hoping that her tiredness wouldn’t make her colder than usual for them. What woke her up wasn’t the morning light or even her empty stomach. No, it was a crackling sound by the side of her head. Soft and hesitant, it was barely audible, even in the relative silence of the place. Confused, she lifted her head, scanning for it. Nothing outside… Oh no! Her eggs were breaking! Her precious little babies… No… She picked up the first piece that had fallen. She tried pushing it back in place, but it only fell inside the egg, disappearing in the blackness. And then the tiniest of three-fingered hands stuck outside, grabbing the edge of the hole. She leaned her head to the floor, her eyes shining with amazement as she watched a tiny beak pushing its way outside and biting onto the shell. Through a lot of effort, it eventually managed to enlarge the hole a bit before pausing to catch its breath. A baby…

“Who are you texting?” Mickey asked him right away. “R.” Adam signed. “Cool cool…” Mickey replied, eyeing the phone. As Adam waited for him to stop looking at it, he perked up again. “Is it about me?” He asked, his hands and feet clinging onto Adam’s shell. “Are you talking about gifts? Can I see it? I won’t tell, I promise!” Adam tried to dislodge the ball of excitement from his back, but Mickey was unsurprisingly slippery. Adam suddenly understood how Raph could get frustrated with him sometimes. When Mickey really wanted something, he sure could find a surprising amount of patience in himself. “Come on…” Mickey insisted. “Is it something cool? Like uh… a new video game? Orrr… oh, oh! The new re-edition of the Silver Sentry comic that’ll come out in a month! Oh wait, that’s not gonna be on time for my birthday… Come on, just tell me what it is. The wait is killing me!” “You’re killing everyone else.” Don said as he passed by them. “You’ve been harassing everyone for the past two weeks now. We can’t even leave any box laying around without you prying them open and siffling through them for gifts. Which reminds me…” He paused, making his way to him and pointing so close to Mickey that he had to lean his head back to avoid being stabbed in the eye. “If I see you one more time messing around with my very delicate equipment, I swear we will be eating turtle soup for dinner.” He warned with an almost seething tone. Mickey chuckled nervously as Don’s eyes bore into his own. The picture held for a few seconds until Don raised a single eye ridge. “Do I make myself clear?” He asked Mickey. “…Crystal.” Mickey answered. Satisfied with it, Don’s serious facade immediately faded away, replaced by a content smile. “He’s all yours.” He told Adam, his steps leading him straight towards the coffee machine. “…Remind me never to piss Don off ever again.” Mickey said once he was gone. Adam reminded himself not to piss Don off ever. Geez.
