Don brought the remaining adults inside the garage before waving at a pile of materials in one corner. “Alright!” He exclaimed. “Aw man, don’t tell me we’re gonna work? On our days off? How could you!” Mickey complained. “Stop whinin’, Mickey.” Raph grumbled. “Ya know he does that every year. Ya had ta see it comin’.” “Yeah, and every year I complain, thank you very much.” Mickey replied, unphased. “It’s boring to work on days off!” “Yes, but it’s not every day I get to have everyone available at the same time to help me.” Don countered. “And since it’s my day, I get to choose what I want.” “Boo…” “So what are we making today?” Leo asked. “Well, as you might recall, the magnificent bike we’d made for Adam was totaled a while ago, and we never got around to remaking it.” Don said. “Uh, you know Adam’s day was yesterday, right?” Mickey questioned. “Yes.” Don answered. “But… remember when we were fifteen and we’d made the Battle Shell?” He asked. “This was the first time we’d made a vehicle, and we’d all worked together to make it happen. We’ve never really all worked on something like that after. Even the train was a duo only job. So I thought… it might be fun to all work on this one, and since we already have the blueprints and all the parts, I think if we all work together, it will be done before the end of the day.” “Hmm, okay, I can see it.” Mickey admitted.

The purple one moved something against the back of her muzzle, a strident noise and some vibrations caused by the item in his hand. He hummed, removing it and fiddling with it before trying again. He repeated the same process a few more times before… …something clicked. He fiddled some more, and she shivered as his finger passed over some skin that shouldn’t be accessible right now. The air felt cold on part of her face… And then the muzzle fell off, landing on her pillow. …! Her muzzle! Ah! She kneeled up, passing her hands over her face in shock. Her skin felt both dry and wrinkly at the same time, the color slightly lighter due to lack of sun exposure. It was tingling her, cooling off in the fresh air. She brushed over her jawline, her cheeks, her mouth, her beak… She could touch her teeth, she would be able to eat normally and lick her babies clean now! She could… She could smell better, without the lingering metallic and leathery addition to it. She could yawn! She could do anything, she could… “There, took me all night, but I finally managed to get it off.” The purple one told her. “What do you thin- Woah!” She jumped at him, wrapping her limbs around him and locking him to the floor. She churred while rubbing her newly freed cheeks all over him. Oh thank you thank you thank you! She was so happy to be free! She never wanted to have a muzzle on her ever again! She would never bite anyone ever again, she promised!

Today felt like a lilac day. From plum to grapes, amethyst to violets, lavender to galaxies… Maybe even ube, who knew. The day started like any other for Don. With a strong coffee to wake him up. Adam shuffled under the basking light, not quite ready to wake up yet. Leo had already left an hour ago for his morning meditation, but both Mickey and Raph were still with him, and he was too comfortable to leave yet. He absentmindedly listened as Don left for the kitchen, returning with a cup of coffee. Don walked towards his lab, sliding the strong metal door open… Only to face-plant onto something else, making him spill some of his coffee. “Ah!” Adam peeled an eye open as Mickey mumbled next to him. “Mmmmwhat is it?” He asked Don. “Um…” Don hesitantly replied. “It’s… a door…” “Maybe you should drink your coffee before trying to open doors then.” Mickey pointed out with a yawn. “I know how to open a door, Mickey.” Don replied. “Could have fooled me.”

“Hmm! Speaking of the train, it’s almost time, isn’t it?” Don noted. Adam looked at the time. It was! “Guess we’ll finish this another day then.” Mickey concluded as he picked his own photos through the carpet of them. “That was totally fun, though. We should do it again!” “It was interesting to revisit some of those moments.” Don nodded. “Though I suppose that is the exact purpose of photo albums.” Adam quickly collected his equipment, bringing it back inside his own room. Ellie wasn’t quite awake yet, but she would be very soon. That should give him just the time to go do the next thing on his list. Something he’d been wanting to do for months now. He was excited. He climbed back down the stairs and joined the others at the sewer door. Leo volunteered to remain behind to keep an eye on Ellie while they were gone. Adam suspected he wanted more alone time. Not like they would be gone for that long. They jogged the not quite mile between the lair and their destination. In front of them was the train they had been looking at the photos of, mostly completed by now. The interior was relatively bare, and they were still missing the second engine, as well as a few screens, but it was fully functional. Don and he tested it for a few feet and fixed the rails on the whole path, but they’d never taken it through the full ride yet. Emphasis on the yet part.

The red one patted her bicep, and she blinked her eyes back open. She lifted her head, watching them. “Come on mama, we’ll show you our home. Way better than this place. Uh, no offense of course.” The orange one told her. They returned the babies to her, and she wrapped her arms around them, sniffing them just to make extra sure they were fine. They were. Of course they were. “Come on, let’s go home.” The orange one insisted. Home? What about her home? They waved at her, pointing between the babies and the vent. …Babies? Vent? Nooo, the babies were too young to leave… unless… Did… Did they have their own home? Oh… She thought that they were there to join her bale, but actually, they wanted her to join theirs. Or maybe just her babies? No no, her too. They waved some more, standing up and talking about home and other words she couldn’t understand. She looked at the place. This was about as good as she could find in terms of hideout. It was extra safe, extra cozy and extra away from the elements. But it was true that her stomach wouldn’t really let her use that vent much longer. Probably not more than a few weeks at most, even. Did they have better? They did look really healthy and clean, they weren’t sick and wounds had healed quickly and efficiently. Maybe… they would have space for her and her babies? Somewhere safe, where they could roam around and be as loud as they wanted to? Well, she wouldn’t really know until she went and checked it out.

“Psh, this is easy.” Mickey bragged at some point. “I could do this all day.” “Tsk.” Raph rolled his eyes. A glint passing through Leo’s eyes was the only warning they got before he promptly kicked Don’s stick to the side, sending him crashing onto Raph, who then went right onto Mickey, and finally, Adam. Adam just barely had the time to backflip onto the floor before everything collapsed in front of him, leaving a single bamboo stick standing and a smug looking turtle atop it. “You were saying?” Leo asked. “What is it this week and trying to prove me wrong?” Mickey complained. “I was doing so well! The Battle Nexus Champion deserves more respect!” “He says to another Battle Nexus Champion.” Don pointed out. “Just because Leo won a trophy doesn’t mean I didn’t.” Mickey argued. “Maybe next time ya won’t go sneakin’ up on people ta try and find yer stupid gifts before they’re ready.” Raph told him. “But that’s half of the fun!” Mickey exclaimed. “The rush, the thrill, the stress!” “And then he’s scared when we go on missions that could have monsters.” Don replied. “That was a decade ago. I’m miles stronger now.” Mickey waved off. There was a look shared between Don and Raph but Adam didn’t quite know what it meant. They subtly smirked, hiding it the moment Mickey turned around. “What?” Mickey asked. “Hmm?” Don replied. “I thought you would try to deny it.” Mickey explained while squinting his eyes at them. “Why would we deny the truth?” Don responded. “Noooo, something’s not right. It’s suspicious.” Mickey insisted. “What are you two planning?” “We ain’t you, Mickey. We’ve got better things ta do than try ta ruin people’s day all da time.” Raph grumbled. “Now are we settin’ all them spikes ‘gain or nan?” “Hmmm… I’m onto you two.” Mickey warned them, his fingers moving between his eyes and their own.
