CURE wasn't "basically unknown" in the early 2000s, but it took 4 years to get a US release. PULSE went through the same delay. They were very well received then, but now CURE has made it into the canon of great Japanese films, not just Japanese horror.

His piece has a basic assumption that Pitchfork should cover nothing but "indie" music because that's how it began. If you don't agree with that, the argument falls flat. Even in the 2000s, Pitchfork was never The Wire or The Quietus.
