A small Bay Area fiber arts studio, strategically located within drinking distance of the Napa Valley. This is a microblog. I post about #fiberarts, #weaving, #handspinning, #needlework ( #knitting, #crochet, etc.), #gardening and my #artistlife in NorCal.

Took a break for the local #NoKings protest. You can't be intimidated by authoritarian a$$hole$ when you're being silly. 🌞😜 #grantifa #artistlife
Just woken up by a 4.5 temblor. 😲 Everybody/everything OK but I Do Not Like Earthquakes.
It's on my calendar. Now it just depends on the weather. 🥵
Somewhere a Reeves is missing 2 bobbins, its "bug" (as in VW) kate, and its distaff. I think the flyer is from a Lendrum. You might contact the seller so these parts can get to the wheel owners.
Big day for the sidewheel ferryboat Eureka and Vallejo! The #NPS and San Francisco Maritime Museum are moving her to Mare Island. There will be a crowd on hand to welcome her this evening. More pix later. #NHL #MINSY #SFMM #localhistory #artistlife
The local museum has its big gala on 9/20 & I'm going. Everything in the studio-- #weaving #spinning, etc--is on the "back burner" until I get an evening suit made. #sewing #fiberarts #goawayimsewing #1940s #artistlife
TBH, I've haven't given it much thought. All the yarns in the studio are US-spun to meet labeling requirements. Everything I've bought in 2025 came from CA, OR, or WA, not because of politics, but because my all suppliers are on the West Coast (many in my fibershed).
What you're describing is "intentional" spinning, which takes both knowledge & practice. "The Intentional Spinner" by Judith Mackenzie will supply the knowledge. You know the rest. 😉
A Macomber CP ("Baby Mac") doesn't take up any more floor space than a rigid-heddle loom on its stand. Just sayin'... 😉 #enabler
/2 suppliers. It's not nice, and reflects poorly on the person doing the bad-mouthing.
I've been doing business with the owners of Georgia Yarn Company for about 20 years, and they are friendly, honest, and knowledgeable. The fiber arts community knows their reputation, and is happy to do business with them. OTOH, the fiber arts community doesn't really like people who slam their 1/🧵
*Sigh.* Had you bothered to LOOK at what Michael sells, you'd see that he sells Georgia-grown cotton yarns. But you didn't look. Just as you didn't bother to Google "American-made yarns." If you had, you might have found this list of suppliers. www.ourdailycraft.com/2025/01/13/a...
American Made Yarn Producers - Our Daily Craft
These American made yarn producers are great to know about if you want to reduce your carbon footprint and buy more locally.

Sorry, but you're wrong: Not ALL yarns are imported. Georgia Yarn Co. & Brown Sheep Yarn Co. are just 2 of many companies producing/selling US-made yarns. #knowyoursuppliers #dontspreadrumors
The things one does for the one they love. "Honey, could you possibly cut my hair & trim my beard for tomorrow's gig? Please?" I sat him on a kitchen stool on the patio & gave him a haircut & beard trim in less than 20 minutes. As it was getting dark. #artistlife #pandemicskills
That's a really good book for learning art yarns. Sarah taught an advanced spinners' workshop on designing/producing art yarns just after the book came out, so I spent a day learning about art yarns, including that I'm too uptight & finicky to produce really great art yarns. 😆
If they can't afford the price of admission (which is really quite low), maybe they shouldn't be trying to gain access. I teach people to spin on a spindle that costs less than $2 to make, but I tell them to upgrade ASAP so they can enjoy the process.
Sharpening up my #sewing skills by turning some #handloomed fabric from India into a camp shirt before cutting into my own #handwoven cloth. #fiberarts #newclothes #artistlife
WTF?? So now I "overconsume" because I write with a 20-YO fountain pen I fill from a bottle of ink that lasts me a several years? (For the stylophiles, it's a Lamy Safari, M nib, filled with Diamine "Writer's Blood.") That is just...weird.
