Interested in birds, butterflies, moths and plants. Helping to monitor the movements of migrating Black-headed Gulls 😀
Roundhay Park, Leeds, today where the Black-headed Gulls provide plenty of interest.
235J has been spotted in Riga, Latvia 🇱🇻 and 236J visits St Petersburg, Russia 🇷🇺
My favourite 288S came to visit me at Yeadon Tarn on New Year’s Eve last year! 😀

Uit DNA-onderzoek bleek dat ik wel heel veel mannelijke scholeksters ving. Stukje over geschreven.

DNA testing showed that I caught a lot of male oystercatchers. Short story about that (in Dutch, but Google can translate it 😉)

I was beginning to think that BHG 2440 had moved away from Yeadon Tarn but was pleased to catch up with it today.
Born at Shotton Steel Works in North Wales (ringed as a nestling) it arrived here 8 weeks ago with assistance from Storm Amy! 🤣

Blue Sky in Yorkshire!
Black-headed Gulls continue to arrive back in Otley where there is still some disruption due to the river bridge repairs.
273J is seeking sanctuary on top of the United Reformed Church……next to the Chip Shop! 😀

By my calculations at least 72% of the Black-headed Gulls ringed in Yorkshire on 3 Dec 2024 have already returned this autumn. 😀
This includes Otley, Roundhay and Halifax.

There were approximately 300 Black-headed Gulls at Redcar Tarn, Keighley, today with an Adult:Juvenile ratio in the region of 15:1
I have learned this week that the Adult:Juvenile ratio varies depending on the location.
Is this expected?

There were hundreds of BHGs at Roundhay Park and Soldiers Fields today. Very difficult to count! Maybe 300+
I sampled a group of 60 by the lakeside cafe & 15 of these were hungry juveniles but I suspect that the overall ratio of adults: juveniles in the park would be higher.

After 8 years & 400 Black-headed Gulls caught & ringed at Center Parcs Sherwood, on Saturday we had our first ever control. Not got the full details yet but we do know it was ringed in June 2003 making it 22 years old.

Ringed under BTO licence.

Yeadon Tarn was partially frozen today but the gulls didn’t seem too bothered. 🥶
c200 Black-headed Gulls vastly outnumbered their grey-legged Common Gull cousins.
Presumably these two species have a common ancestor?

I've been updating our collaborative #CootStudy database. I started the study 17 years ago & thanks to a network of bird ringers across Britain & Ireland we've now colour-marked 4,400 Coot & received over 13,000 re-sightings. Pretty cool for a bird you hardly see in flight! #Ornithology #BirdRinging

The parasitised Luffia lapidella larva, which should have metamorphosed in the summer has made it to Halloween.🎃
It stopped feeding last week and wandered away from the lichen substrate provided for it.

This Larva Aeterna seems to be the last of the Baildon Luffia colony 😕
