Many thanks to @npr.org's Weekend All Things Considered for having me on to talk about, among other things, how the MO GOP defense of their new congressional map resembles the "Air Bud Rule" that allowed Buddy the Dog to play basketball (and I suppose football, soccer, volleyball and baseball):
What can a 90s kids’ movie tell us about the redistricting battle? : Consider This from NPR
When the Missouri legislature began to redraw maps mid-decade, it reminded a reporter of a very specific movie scene. The film was Air Bud, and although the plot focuses on a loophole that allows a do...

Roughly a decade after its closure, Sbarro is returning to the Columbia Mall. I imagine some grotesque zombie iteration a la The Mountain in "Game of Thrones."

Oh, just listening to Death Cab and reading about ticks.

I am just a bumpkin and had no idea bratwurst patties were a thing that exists.

A Trader Joe's, years and years fervently prayed for, has opened in my town. I love the way the graphic designer pieced together a timeline of grocery lust. (And how fun to see my old colleagues' names and faces in some of the newspaper clippings.)
Columbia begged for a Trader Joe's for two decades. Now we finally have one.
From Facebook groups to newspaper columns, Columbia residents have been petitioning for Trader Joe's since 2004.

Jabronis, all.
Was looking through a pre-trial brief for a lawsuits around the Missouri redistricting referendum. Chuck Hatfield of People Not Politicians quoted The Rock (and then included a footnote where Travis Kelce quoted The Rock):

What a delight.
It’s rare that a headline outlasts the person who wrote it. But long after Bill Brink’s father had died, “Ford to City: Drop Dead” endures in the national consciousness.
50 Years Ago, My Father Wrote the Headline ‘Ford to City: Drop Dead’
It’s rare that a headline outlasts the person who wrote it. But long after my father’s death, “Ford to City: Drop Dead” still reverberates.

“Buck naked” is unclothed.

“Butt naked” is unclothed and up to something.
Not to be THAT dictionary, but…

It’s ‘per se,’ not ‘per say.’
It’s ‘dog-eat-dog world,’ not ‘doggy-dog world.’
It’s ‘hunger pangs,’ not ‘hunger pains.’
It’s ‘one and the same,’ not ‘one in the same.’
It's 'buck naked,' not 'butt naked.'

I am so tickled that Mizzou's Raptor Rehabilitation Project cares for an American kestrel named Grace, who also goes by the name Murder Toes.

Once, when I worked at the newspaper, Axe sent me a box of men's body sprays. They suggested I do a fun reader giveaway, but I wasn't about to loose that on society so I tossed the box in a corner. Sometimes the smokers would snag one for a poor man's pyrotechnics display in the back lot.

A Writer's Prayer:

Lord grant me...
The self-import of an autofiction writer
The grand delusion of a genre writer
The moral superiority of a lit writer
and the forced pensiveness of a poet

Amen

Last night @aarikdanielsen.bsky.social and @hollypelesky.bsky.social hosted a writers karaoke at Cafe Berlin, and it was so much fun. This is probably my favorite-ever photo of me and Aarik. Although we aren't siblings by blood, we are set of denim-clad wondertwins.
