I’m excited to share that my paper ‘Hermeneutic Decentering’ is forthcoming in Philosophical Quarterly! It discusses (what I call) ‘hermeneutic dismissiveness’ as a kind of epistemic injustice, then develops a generalized version of Iris Murdoch’s notion of unselfing. This involves decentering …

… from all ”the real trouble“ and presents itself as “apolitical.”

This is from her essay “The Novelist as Metaphysician” (1950)!

“And can we really describe … what moral disagreements are like without … using the real concepts which are causing the real trouble? Political concepts, for instance.”

Once again, Iris Murdoch was doing it before it was cool: here, dissing Ideal Theory-style analytic ethics that abstracts away …

"Science vs. art is a stupid distinction though. This is what Aristophanes should have said: Zeus divided not us but our attention, so that we should never be able to deal with the whole situation."

you don’t understand bro, if we didn’t lie, no one would buy our product 😩
Consider the implications if ChatGPT started saying "I don't know" to even 30% of queries
- a conservative estimate based on the paper's analysis of factual uncertainty in training data. Users accustomed to receiving confident answers to virtually any question would likely abandon such systems rapidly.

… it will be necessary to get rid of the existing intellectual class so as to concentrate that power in the “right” hands. Also, of course, to force feed the opposite message (“books and thinking are useless, you want yummy slop!”) until it’s too late for most people.

I was chatting with a student yesterday, ranting about a future where the primary class distinction is between people addicted to AI slop and people who can read books and reason critically. Access to such things will be an elite status symbol, as in earlier periods of mass illiteracy. But first …

Why yes I would recommend this book! And I did!

@quillkukla.bsky.social’s latest just hit my mailbox.
Carrie’s hand holds Quill R. Kukla’s new book “Sex Beyond Yes: Pleasure and Agency for Everyone”. It is orange and purple, with a stylised hand pulling down a blind. The back cover of the same book. Various endorsements, including Carrie’s.

“Bold, incisive, and brilliant, Quill R Kukla's Sex Beyond Yes is a provocative exploration of how to negotiate sex that is pleasurable, free, and ethically sound. A must-read for any feminist."
-KATE MANNE,
author of Down Girl and Unshrinking

"What a smart, level-headed, and even-keeled exploration of the highly contentious, deeply polarizing topic of how to get what you want and avoid what you don't when it comes to having sex-however you like to have it. If the #MeToo movement left you wanting more, this is the book for you."
-SUSAN STRYKER,
author of Transgender History

"Readable without sacrificing rigor and sexy without sacrificing seriousness, Sex Beyond "Yes' is a must-read for anyone who approaches sexual relationships thoughtfully, as we all should."
-JOHN CORVINO,
author of Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination

"Timely, well-informed, wise, and highly readable, Sex Beyond 'Yes' draws upon an exceptionally deep and broad understanding, both of the theoretical background and of the diverse and richly nuanced realities of human experience. A rare gem."

Thunderheart was much better than Dances With Wolves. Just saying. Watch it instead.

Graham Greene as Crow Horse in the 1992 film Thunderheart. He wears shades and a denim jacket and holds a black handgun, pointed upward. He has long straight hair and looks at the camera directly in a way that is extremely badass.
