One state scientist who asked that her name not be used because she was concerned about retaliation said with her current pay, she can’t afford childcare for her kids as she juggles parenting and work for the state’s pesticide regulators, despite her PhD. She also said the lack of a fully-paid family leave program meant she was back at work part-time on a Monday, after giving birth on a Friday. Kaylynn Newhart, an environmental scientist who has worked for the state for more than 30 years and hopes to retire soon, said she lives paycheck-to-paycheck and doubts she’ll be able to stay in California after she retires.

Welp, CA state scientists are going on strike next week.

Cal HR has been refusing to budge and we've been working on an expired contract for 3 years now.

We've been prepping for a while, but now it is kicking off.

It is a long list, but all CA state agencies that have scientists on staff.
Environmental Scientists are the biggest job classification in our bargaining unit, but it also includes chemists, archaeologists, veterinarians, lots of other job titles.
Engineers aren't part of the bargaining unit

CAPS is rallying in Sacramento today 8/30, 12-2 to support our bargaining team as they negotiate with the state for better contract for CA state scientists.
The strike authorization vote is a way to potentially bring a strike as leverage we can use in our bargaining.

If you value food safety, you should value the CA state scientists who inspect CA agriculture. Also the scientists who work to ensure clean air and clean water.
