One month left! Who is coming to my invited talk at APA? #APA2025
A screenshot of the APA division 8 email encouraging individuals to attend the division's invited talks on August 8th. At 11:30 AM Mountain Time, Dr. Catherine Wall will be presenting her talk "Examining the broader implication of research on transgender and gender diverse issues."

Some absolute rockstars in my department are accepting student -- each and every one of these researchers is amazing.

If you have students interested in health psychology, tell them to consider VCU!

In 2015, @pinknews.bsky.social published a feature on Trans Broken Arm syndrome which I cited in my Social Science & Medicine article about trans broken arm syndrome. A couple of months ago, a PinkNews referenced my article.

It just feels so... cyclical. And I am here for it
What is 'trans broken arm syndrome'?
Trans broken arm syndrome is an especially common term within academic fields on trans healthcare, but what does it mean?

Some folks go to conference host cities early to sightsee. I go early to visit the local roller derby league

I have a tough time convincing my students that ChatGPT is not a substitute for actual work. There's no way in fuck I have ever pushed students left or manipulated university structures to push my "woke" agenda

Linda McMahon on Columbia settlement: "This is a monumental victory for conservatives who wanted to do things on these elite campuses for a long time because we had such far left-leaning professors."

So far, I agree with like... 98% of your opinions (Windows PCs are better than Macs). I'll have to share the name for a group of Rabbi with my rabbi. I think she'll get a kick out of it

Ok I’ll play. 1 like= 1 opinion. Maybe political and quite possibly not

It's wild to me how "defund the police" ended up leading to similar (or increased) funding in most majority democrat cities, while defunding science and public radio have effectively been done with the stroke of the pen

This is fucked.

Science has been *made* political by people who are fighting against truth

NEW: In an unprecedented move, the NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take positions on advisory councils that make final decisions on grant funding.

NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and told to expect placements by political appointees.
Exclusive: NIH to dismiss dozens of grant reviewers to align with Trump priorities
The move would undo years of work, leaving advisory councils understaffed, and without the full expertise needed for reviews.

That's completely legit. Most of the tenure track jobs become available in the Fall (which is not to say that I haven't been looking at, being interviewed for, or working non-tenure track positions)
catherinesjwall.com
Related: Is your department hiring this fall? Do you have a program that is willing to push back against the current administration's anti-science agenda?

This talk may or may not be a preview of future talks I would love to give at your university!

I will be talking about the impacts of the threat of anti-trans legislation on trans folks, susceptibility to medical misinformation about gender affirming healthcare, and then showing how we can use issues impacting trans folks as a means by which to understand broader issues

I'm tired. I had hoped to be writing today rather than dealing with this bullshit. But here we are
catherinesjwall.com
Berrett suggests in her concurring opinion that transgender individuals have not "suffered a history of de jure discrimination." She is explicitly wrong in this statement (as was noted during court proceedings), and she will continue to be wrong as additional anti-trans laws are passed

They deserve the best care that they can get, including puberty blockers. Trans youth deserve support and kindness, not the cruelty that is clearly present in this ruling
catherinesjwall.com
Trans youth deserve to live their lives and not have to suffer through first puberty (a harrowing experience). They deserve to be able to play sports and go to gym class without the risk of constantly being late because they are sent to a separate "but equal" bathroom that is across the school
catherinesjwall.com
The arguments that are made are circular bullshit. The existence of transgender youth is apparent in... their existence. They are real, they are youth going through their lives. I have worked with them through my volunteering experiences. I understand a lot of what they deal with
catherinesjwall.com
Trans youth benefit from gender affirming healthcare. This ruling will lead to more deaths. Full stop.
catherinesjwall.com
I wish I could say that I was surprised by this decision. I listened to the arguments in real time, and there wasn't a single part of me that had hope that any of the conservative judges could be swayed by rational arguments on this highly (and stupidly) politicized issue
mjsdc.bsky.social
🚨By a 6–3 vote, the Supreme Court UPHOLDS Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors, concluding that it does NOT discriminate on the basis of sex, is not subject to heightened scrutiny, and survives rational basis review. All three liberals dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

I hope that other nations continue to support vital research. I honestly kinda look forward to seeing who decides to fill the gaps
catherinesjwall.com
It will take some significant amount of time to fix the damage that has been done.

And that process is going to have to include protections that prevent this kind of thing from happening ever again.
catherinesjwall.com
As I watch grant after grant after grant get cancelled, I can't help but think about what this means for the future of research in the United States.

We have seen how quickly the damage can be done. We have seen how an administration can use grants as cudgels to get their way

If you happen to be going to APA this year, I would love to see you all there!
