Champagne socialist. UK politics, foreign affairs & overreacting to stuff we'll all have forgotten about in a week.
At the end of today's yoga lesson the teacher asked if we all wanted to get together for a Christmas drink after the last lesson and the resultant sound can only be described as a room full of middle aged women making a noise signifying both "what a lovely idea" AND "I don't really want to do that"

At the risk of coming across all Peter Hitchens, ever since the clocks have changed people I know have been dropping like flies.
Of course, some will say this is just what happens at winter as you and your circle of acquaintances get old, people die. To which I say, that is an outrageous slur.

The two child benefit cap has been scrapped, the OBR hasn't been yet, but aside from that what major Cameron-Osborne policies still survive? Surely not that many (any?)

One of the reasons Badenoch will never be PM is a big chunk of the constituency she needs to make it happen hate stuff like this and she continually shows no awareness, or perhaps interest, in that being the case.
Utterly juvenile and unparliamentary antics from Kemi Badenoch during her response to the budget.

Desperate, undignified and ineffective.

As there's a Met police ban in place on heavy agricultural vehicles around Whitehall I'm assuming this tractor has been seized and on its way to be crushed?
I think at this point if you're including Diane Abbott - a woman who has never held government office, has been a backbencher since 2020, and is scarcely a government ally - on your list of political wrongdoers, we all know exactly what your real concerns are

Attended a funeral today for someone who took early retirement at 55 and died aged 87. It already seems like the stuff of legends and I imagine it'll only become even more so.

A strange thing about Nick Land is that, even though no one has heard of him, suddenly people start talking about him and I've never any idea why.

I imagine Witkoff isn't bothering to follow any of the security stuff you're supposed to do if you're in a position like his, and so he's completely compromised, and whoever's leaked his conversation doesn't care that he's now aware of this as they assume he's going to be removed from his role now.

The reason I'm not in politics is because the policy solution I'd reach for here is tear gas.

Lots of notable bits in this piece from William Hague but mainly how the stuff we used to be told helped make nations strong - rule of law, strong democratic norms, low levels of corruption - now counts for nothing in the face of superior technology. I'm unconvinced

Maybe one for a psychoanalyst to unpick but notable that someone with a PhD, who works in academia as a lecturer, thinks the original sin of Labour politics was the expansion of higher education

Feel like I'm at serious risk of ending up in a position where I read more pieces predicting what's in Reeves' budget (about 768 so far) than pieces telling me what's actually in the budget (probably just the one).

I don't understand Badenoch's argument that it's the size of the state that is blocking economic growth. Surely if you e.g. doubled the amount paid in basic state pension you'd both grow the size of the state & (potentially) see economic growth as pensioners went out and spent more in Wetherspoons?

If this was America the Daily Mail would now spend the 6 months singing the praises of the government and Lisa Nandy until the Telegraph deal goes through. But it isn't, and they won't and I'd be surprised if the deal gets clearance.
