- exempts AB from net zero electricity reg (AB produces 44% of all electricity-related GHGs in Canada).
- delays methane reg by 5 years (75% redn by 2035 rather than 2030.

STUDENTS ACROSS CANADA DENOUNCE FEDERAL BUDGET THAT BACKS FOSSIL FUELS, NOT THEIR FUTURES, AND RBC FOR CASHING IN ON A BURNING PLANET TORONTO, ONTARIO — In the wake of the federal budget, students at nine universities across Canada are demanding that the Carney government change course from funding climate chaos and war toward building a green, fair, and equitable future. They say both the government’s budget and the record of Canada’s big banks including RBC on fossil fuel financing are driving the same crisis, one that jeopardizes their futures, fuels the climate emergency, and violates Indigenous rights. Students are calling on Canada’s big five banks (RBC, BMO, TD, CIBC and Scotiabank) to stop financing fossil fuel expansion and respect Indigenous Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, particularly by rejecting new LNG projects such as the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT), which the Gitxsan and Gitanyow nations oppose. Recent federal and provincial legislation, including Bill C-5 and the creation of a Major Projects Office led by the former Trans Mountain board chair, will weaken environmental oversight, sideline Indigenous rights, in the guise of so-called “de-risking” destructive projects for banks as so-called ‘nation-building’ . This can pave the way for more climate-wrecking “carbon bomb” developments that threaten ecosystems and Canada’s emissions targets. Students are responding to the recently tabled 2025 federal budget, which pours billions into fossil fuels and weapons instead of protecting the people who will inherit this country. The government’s plan commits an additional C$9 billion for the military, boosting overall defence spending to roughly 2 % of GDP, while continuing to underwrite oil and gas expansion through subsidies and so-called “carbon management” incentives. The establishment of a Major Projects Office, tasked with fast-tracking large-scale industrial and energy developments, further signals that corporate and geopolitical interests … The protests were organized by Change Course (formerly Banking on a Better Future) supporting student campus chapters across the country including the University of British Columbia (both in Vancouver and Okanagan), Simon Fraser University, the University of Toronto, York University, University of Ottawa, University of Waterloo, Lakehead University and Concordia University. For four years, student activists have led campus protests, prompting 14 student unions to sign a National Student Union Letter urging banks to stop financing fossil fuels. Several student unions have made public commitments to cutting ties with RBC by switching to bank with a credit union, banning sponsorships from the banks, and ending leasing contracts with RBC. Most recently, the Canadian Federation of Students Ontario adopted the Banks Off Campus campaign in partnership with Change Course, representing 350,000 students province-wide. “Once again our federal government has signaled to us its priorities: war, resource extraction, austerity, short-term corporate profits - meanwhile students and workers get the short end of the stick with high tuition fees, rising rents and grocery prices, and recession-levels of youth unemployment, ” says Cyrielle Ngeleka, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students - Ontario. “The government, at all levels, has shown that they'll step on our rights to organize as fast as they'll bulldoze over Indigenous land and further the climate crisis. These attacks require all of us to unite and fight back!” “At Lakehead, we’re taking action because the federal government and RBC are driving Canada in the wrong direction by pouring billions into fossil fuels and calling it progress. The 2025 budget props up oil and gas, ramps up military spending, and sets the stage to fast-track destructive fossil fuel projects through Bill C-5 and the new Major Projects Office, ” adds Heather Wright of Climate Justice Lakehead. “RBC continues to bankroll projects like the Prince …
