Country music star and veteran Zach Bryan's new song "Bad News" has ignited MAGA fury over lyrics criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids under President Donald Trump’s administration, Newsweek reports. The Grammy award-winning singer and Navy veteran posted a teaser of the song over the weekend, with the lyrics: "ICE is gonna come, bust down your door / Try to build a house no one builds no more / But I've got a telephone / Kids are all scared and all alone." The song also touches on the deep division in America since 2016, singing: "I've got some bad news / The fading of the red, white and blue." As the lyrics went viral, MAGA took to social media to express their disgust with someone who has previously described himself as a libertarian and has also spoken out on transgender rights in 2023 following a right wing boycott of Bud Light over a partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Bryan also appeared on right-wing influencer Joe Rogan's podcast, addressing the "culture war" controversy and discussed defending his trans family members, including his "sister's spouse". Country singer, Trump supporter and "Celebrity Apprentice" winner John Rich, took to X to say, "Who's ready for the Zach Bryan-Dixie Chicks tour? Prob a huge Bud Light sponsorship for this one," referring to when the country trio now known as The Chicks were reviled by country radio and fans after criticizing George W. Bush. Rich, one half of the duo Big and Rich, later posted, "Nashville is full of guys like this." Far-right podcaster Tomi Lahren reposted Rich's comment with one word, "Trash," while conservative commentator and MAGA loyalist Benny Johnson said on X: "Country superstar Zach Bryan takes aim at ICE, claiming the country is fading in a snippet from his upcoming song 'Bad News.'" Johnson noted that Bryan "just drew over 112,000 fans to what became the largest concert in U.S. history last week. Now, that will never happen again. When will they learn?" Meanwhile, for each MAGA fan lost, Bryan seemed to gain new ones on the other side of the aisle. "Im not a fan of Zach Bryan by any means but calling out ICE in a song as one of the biggest modern country artists is actually huge," wrote one X account. Michelle Kinney, co-founder and chief creative officer of The Seneca Project, said on X, "F YEAH!!! Country singer and military veteran Zach Bryan drops new song criticizing ICE and the collapse of American democracy. This moment calls for moral and artistic courage — MORE OF THIS!!!" Another X user said, "Wait Zach Bryan, I'm sorry I wasn’t familiar with your game."
