After a year and a half of hard work, I'm happy to share that I'm ready to start posting my first finished comic story of the main "Dark Children" project!

Ninkoul rubs his eyes sighing. He looks out towards the walls, leaning against the rails.

Ninkoul: To start, I want to emphasize dhat all I said about dhe alchemy was completely trudhful.
Kellie: I know. You were going off what you knew this whole time. You're also too bold and sincere to say any flat out lie.
Ninkoul: (annoyed.) Yeah, yeah, dhat's why you and odhers scold me when I'm not delicate enough. Anyway... Researching it wasn't anydhing out of dhe ordinary - just anodher part of Gilarian culture which I was invested in. Reading books, exploring practices widh dhe experts - all was part of dhe course for my enlightment dhat would aid me in contributing for future generations, like all lakuzas should. Yet dhe more I dug into dheir practices myself... dhe more I noticed somedhing bizarre.

As the knight continues his tale, Kellie quietly leans against the rail in front of her. The pressure from her braces makes it start cracking, drawing Ninkoul's attention. Kellie wasn't fast enough to stop leaning, as the rail gives in underneath her, but Ninkoul manages to grab her by the shirt.

After both are back to standing straight, Ninkoul resumes the story.

Ninkoul: My own research made me stumble on writings and symbols dhat didn't line up widh dhe fundamentals I'd learnt by dhen. Dhe symbol we followed was indeed dhat of alchemy, but dens and illusions were never spoken of in dhis field, not even once. It was as absurd as saying dhat fire is just like water in substance! I began investigating, comparing all notes and leads dhat I could find. Digging dhrough it made it look more like somedhing branched out of dhis field into some form of own values and even beliefs foreign to dhe alchemy.
Kellie: ... I heard the term "cult" being referred to when groups with such attributes are mentioned.
Ninkoul: Hmm... Dhat would be accurate. You can guess dhat it made me try and go as deep as I could. Asking most people resulted in statements such as dhe misalignments being mere errors... or dhat some of dhem had gone delusional. But sometimes... dhey spoke as if dhose sources I found didn't exist at all.
Kellie: Didn't exist? While being under their noses the whole time?

Kellie finally speaks up, drawing Ninkoul's attention as she approaches it more assertively.

Kellie: With the way you speak of that, it's like you thought of this possibility from the start. In fact, your behaviour about this entire affair has been too spontaneous, especially for you. When we discovered the symbol, you instantly disregarded your strategic way of thinking, prioritizing posthaste investigation. Assuming you knew nothing about this off "alchemist" matter, if it can even be called that...

She crosses her arms, confronting the lakuza up front.

Kellie: Gilarius and the relics we find have always been about being secretive, with puzzles and traps keeping the wrong people at bay. That knowledge alone is enough to deduce that one must not go into its depths without being prepared first. And I can draw only two conclusions from all I've seen, including your behaviour. That this place is all about deception over convoluted puzzles... and you've beem on this trail before.

Ninkoul's expressions shifts somberly as he listens in.

Kellie: Whatever you learnt about them must be deeper than your duty as a lakuza. Something that touched you personally to not let anyone else come with us. So tell me, Ninkoul... Am I correct?

Silence surrounds the two as Kellie awaits for the answer. Only guardians are watching over them. Finally, Ninkoul inhales through his nose.

Ninkoul: Very well. I should have spoken of it sooner dhan I originally intended. Dhe discovery of dhe symbol indeed clouded my judgement.
Kellie: I'm all ears. After all...

She points towards the orb above their heads which illuminates most of the pathway.

Kellie: THIS "full moon" isn't going anywhere either.
Ninkoul: Hrrm... Right.

Upon Ninkoul's touch the magically charged hallway flares up rapidly, opening up the view at a very long and tall standing pathway. A large orb above their heads illuminates the area alongside the patterns.

The duo walks down the stairs taking in the sights. The peculiar part in the hall drawing attention is the standing statues of beasts staring them down...

Kellie: Now THIS looks like a sacred place...
Ninkoul: Agree. Dhough it doesn't really make sense.
Kellie: What do you mean by this?
Ninkoul: See dhere? Dhose statues to watch over us? It is common for sanctuaries of our goddess, dhe Lady, to have dhese but... None of dhem resemble her Children like lakuzas. In fact, I've never seen dhese species before... And I'm not sure how to feel about dhe implications of all dhis...

As she listens in, Kellie raises her eyebrow at him.

Kellie: Is it getting harder to see here, or is it just my eyes struggling to penetrate this darkness?
Ninkoul: No, it certainly isn't just you. (He swishes his tail in front of Kellie.) Grab onto my tail so we wouldn't separate.

The feline clasps onto the lakuza's tail, albeit she digs into his scales. Ninkoul flinches a little.

Ninkoul: You know you still have sharp claws, right?
Kellie: Agh, sorry... I'm still a little jumpy.

The two proceed to walk in silence. As the darkness envelops them, the click clacking of the heels is the only echo accompanying them...

$The click clacking gets louder. Kellie: The sound is beginning to travel further. Could it be a temple? Ninkoul: Eidher dhat, or it's a hidden alchemist establishment. Maybe an academy, or a laboratory for dhe "enlightened". Hard to tell which one exactly. Suddenly, one the steps Ninkoul makes onto the floor causes illumination, travelling through patterns in the newly discovered part of the area. Ninkoul: ... We're finally in magic charged chambers. The knight kneels down to reach his hand out and touch the patterned floor, enveloping his hand with a fraction of his magic.$

Look around the area shows many statues of the same nature: a cloaked figure holding up an orb.

Ninkoul: Dhere is a lot of dhem positioned across dhe corridor and share dhe same details. But somedhing is missing in dhem...
Kellie: ... No symbol we're looking for.
Ninkoul: Precisely. So eidher dhis place is older dhan dhe symbol itself...
Kellie: ... Or this location was never an alchemist "den."

Kellie pulls herself up to get back on her feet after her moment of reprieve.

Ninkoul: Are you sure you're ready to go already?
Kellie: Thanks for looking out for me, but as you mentioned back at the inn, we may be constrained by time. And if there is any chance for this... thing.. to get its mug here, then reaching the end of this place must be our priority.

Ninkoul, despite mild frustration expressed in quiet clenching of his fist, nods in response. The two proceed to walk deeper into the "den", going down the corridor. They reach its narrower pathway, through which the echo becomes more apparent and the area gets only darker...

Ninkoul quietly clenches his fist during a pause, waiting for Kellie to start calming down.

Ninkoul: We won't be slain by Gleizuret. We're far from it, so we're fine. Your fear is completely natural, and you reacted great to it, believe it or not. Remember dhat we're not in dhere anymore, alright?

Kellie nods. The lakuza pats her shoulder.

Ninkoul: Take your time. We'll proceed once you're ready.

He gets up, now using the opportunity to assess their new location properly.

The sight of the abandoned tall hallway is looming over their heads, with statues lined up in rows.

Ninkoul: Hmmm... Somedhing's strange about dhis place.
Kellie: ... How strange are we talking?

Ninkoul turns his attention to Kellie, realizing that she's listening in.

Ninkoul: Take a close look at dhe statues here.

Kellie is trembling, her hands are shaking. The vision of the creature from the library lingers in her mind.

Kellie: I... I thought Gleizuret was going to get us... It was r-right there... right... in front of us... What if it gets hrough the veil?! We're trapped here for it to reach! I... I don't... not again...

Ninkoul springs up to his feet as the feline's mind unravels.

Kellie: I-I d-don't want it to..!

Her mind is stuck on the vision of Gleizuret launches itself...
That's when Ninkoul's snapping of the fingers gets the cat's ears to flick, her attention starting to be brought back in.

Ninkoul: Ey, ey, ey, Kellie.

Despite that, she's still having a hard time to calm down. Ninkoul kneels in front of her, his wings spread around as he lowers her arm braces from sight.

Ninkoul: Kell, listen to my voice. Your fears are spiraling. Look at me. Come on, you're strong. Look at me.

Kellie, after struggles to focus and overcome her dread, finally lifts her head up to have eye contact with her friend. The lakuza remains calm as he keeps talking.

Ninkoul: Listen to me. You have to breadhe, alright? Deeply, take it slow.... We're not in dhat library anymore. Deep in...

Kellie slowly starts inhaling and exhaling. Her conscience is gradually grounding itself back in reality.

Ninkoul: ... And out. Dhat's right. Keep going...

The purple light shinning on a penumbra of strange ruins. By the debris, the rippling effect akin to the fireplace's magic starts forming, before spewing Kellie and Ninkoul out of it.

Kellie and Ninkoul collapse on the floor, just flown out of the portal. Ninkoul looks shaken up.

Ninkoul: Dezas, dhat was too close for comfort...

He shakes his head to ward off anxiety, before looking around. Kellie is crawling her way to the sitting position. The view before them resembles that of a dark corridor with a high ceiling.

Ninkoul: I don't dhink we're in dhe Maze anymore... And if we are, it is still possible dhat...

The knight stops his line of thought, his focus shifting to Kellie who has started to pant heavily, trembling.

Ninkoul looks up at the high shelves where he found the strange setup. His wings spread, and he flies up to the mystery button and presses it. Nothing seems to happen. He notices that one of the books is a lever and pulls it.
Something clicks. A section in the bottom of the shelf slides open, revealing an embedding of a strange shape.

Ninkoul: Come on, what is dhis?!

Books start dropping to the floor from the quakes of large footsteps. Kellie looks over, seeing shadows of tendrils finally peeking from around the corner. She's starting to panic and back away...
Her foot doesn't bump into the fireplace. In fact, she loses her balance and has to hurriedly recover it.

Kellie: MYAAARGH!

The fireplace ripples instead of her making contact with stone and flames. After she stands straight, the feline realizes that something's up with it. A single poke of the fireplace proves that it may be just an illusion.

Kellie: Ninkoul, we must go now!

Ninkoul: What? But dhere is a switch here!
Kellie: Just get down here before that thing gets us!

The entity's head starts to show in its shadow, stomps getting much louder and shakier than ever before. Ninkoul clenches his fist, frustrated, then hurriedly flies over to Kellie. The cat doesn't waste a second to grab him by the arm and pull him into the rippling illusion of the fireplace with him.

Just when the two vanish, the entity's tendril strikes the floor in the area they used to stand in...

Kellie's ears pick up on something. Thuds start echoing through the hallways, alerting the duo. Ninkoul starts to rapidly skimming through pages to find the clue.

Ninkoul: Dezas*, we're out of time! We need our next clue, now!

The entity approaching roars. Kellie is freezing up.
Kellie: It knows we're here...
Ninkoul: (Reaches the right page.) Dhere! Found it!

*Dezas - a common lakuzan cuss word

Ninkoul: (Reads from the page.) "One must seek in dhe sea of our knowledge dhe illusion of comfort to pass and bring our vow to its rightful place"!

He lowers the book, seeing the fireplace to match the description and the illustration in the book. Closing the book, his attention returns to Kellie, who's starting to panic. He grips her by the shoulder and tugs her closer to the fireplace to get her attention. Kellie briefly snaps out of it, her eyes all on the knight.

Ninkoul: We need to examine dhe fireplace before we're caught! It's our way dhrough!

The entity is coming closer to their area...

Kellie: (Is getting more nervous.) Anything yet?
Ninkoul: Still looking! Maybe it's a hidden switch, or a... (He perks up and gets up from crouching under the table.) Wait.

I... sadly didn't think it through at the time and made only one such timelapse for this comic LOL
That's a goof up on my end, so I'll be taking that into account more with the next short story.

Ninkoul descends to Kellie's level and lands on the floor right next to her.

Kellie: "The pathway to alchemic ways." At least that's what it says.
Ninkoul: Indeed. Look for anydhing related to dhe full moon or orbital shapes, maybe somedhing about dhe dens. (He taps on a line on one of the pages.) I'd start widh dhis chapter, "Dhe field practices".
Kellie: (Flipping the pages to reach the assigned chapter and skim through it.) What I don't get is why nobody mentions alchemy in Gilarius. Up until now we only dealt with potions and magically enhanced forged items, like your weapons or my braces.
Ninkoul: Dhat's because what you just mentioned IS alchemy.
Kellie: (Pauses and turns to Ninkoul.) What?
Ninkoul: (Proceeds to flip the pages one by one.) Dhink about it. Alchemy in fiction of our current home is a form of magic in its own right. Somedhing dhat has its own balance between abstract and scientific meanings behind dhem.

Ninkoul: And given dhat Gilarius breadhed widh magic, regardless its creature or flora - alchemy would be basically a core aspect of it for blacksmidhs and enchanters.
Kellie: I suposee that would make sense... Then how deep does this subject go exactly?
Ninkoul: ... Dhat is somedhing I wish I could know myself.
Kellie: (Smirks.) You? Ninkoul, the royal knight lakuza that knows his culture like the back of his wings - for once doesn't know something.

Ninkoul stares her down, although no big reaction comes out of it. Kellie simply shrugs, not feeling any discomfort from it whatsoever.

Kellie: I'm merely surprised that there is something you DON'T know about it.
Ninkoul: (Rolling his eyes.) ... Or perhaps, not everyone knows everydhing. Not even I, widh my rushed conclusions at times.
Kellie: Yes, but that's rare with you. So it will always be a novelty when you admit...

Kellie trails off with her thought. Once again, whispers envelop the hallways...

Kellie's brushing through the books as she's trying to peek onto their covers. Echoing whispers are heard by her coming from one of the hallways, prompting her ear to twitch and her to look in its direction.
Silence. She shudders at the thought of what she heard.

Kellie: Egh... Never liked this place...

Ninkoul in the meantime is looking through the books on the upper shelves, using levitation to speed up the process. Something catches his eye.

He spots an empty area in the shelf. Suspicious he puts away all the checked books and flies over.

Ninkoul: Somebody must have never brought a book back all dhese centuries-

He trails off, realizing that the empty shelf is a setup, with a button resting just at the back. He exasperates.

Kellie pulls out one of the books and finally locates the symbol they're looking for.

Kellie: Nink, I've found it!

This please. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just hearing "I like this" or "this is so cute" really is nice and makes my day! I don't know how or why people started thinking it was annoying or insincere to give compliments but it's not. Artists like knowing if people resonate with things we make.

The crystals light up, generating a portal. The duo walks through it and enter a landscape of seemingly endless maze, ruins and floating rubbles. The location they're in is a giant library maze.

Kellie: So which direction do we go? This library is a massive maze of its own kind!

Ninkoul walks into the fireplace section of the hall.

Ninkoul: Orion mentioned a category about alchemy being somewhere in dhis area. Look for dhat and our symbol of interest. It should be on a book cover.
Kellie: How do you know it'd be on the cover and not just on the pages?
Ninkoul: Dhere were some people in my time who wore it widh pride.
Kellie: (exasperates.) That... doesn't really aid us much...
Ninkoul: (turns around and spreads his wings.) Dhat's exactly why we can't dawdle. Let us make haste and find our alchemy book.

He flaps his wings, flying up to the highest shelves in the hallway. Kellie watches him with a raised eyebrows.
