In 1995, Liverpool supporter and Lilleshall graduate John Marshall signed for Everton. He passed away on the day he was due to start life as a Toffee.

Through Cardiac Risk in the Young, The John Marshall Fund has raised more than £100,000. This is his story.

Football at all levels has a dangerously insane relationship with its referees, but in non-league it also comes with a chasm between reality and foaming Twitter activists who've never been to a game.

This week's newsletter is on the AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Coventry Sphinx match abandonment.
Rushden & Diamonds match abandonment was the right response from the referee. Non-league deserves a better reaction.
The idiotic opinions of social media meatheads have no bearing on football safeguarding in the real world

A little reminder while the news media continues to take the Rushden & Diamonds manager at his word: nobody was identified and removed from Sphinx Drive before the abandonment of yesterday's match.
November 16, 2025 at 1:16 PM
To be clear:

The abuse in question was more sexually aggressive than sexist.

Contrary to a widely reported claim by their manager, the culprit was not identified and removed. The nearby fans circled the wagons and the abandonment was therefore inevitable.

A match was abandoned after sexist abuse towards a female referee on Saturday.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds' game at Coventry Sphinx was abandoned at half time after the referee told the teams she would not continue.

The teams play in the eighth tier.

I'd like to say I'm stunned that our match was abandoned today because of sexist abuse shouted at the referee.

I'd like to, but I can't.
