After a lot of work and reworking of the old playtest demo, I've finally completed a second playtest demo for my game.

If you see this post, I hope you take the time to check it out.

This is my favorite as well, Rain World and Pikmin are my biggest inspiration for NPC creature behavior

It's a lot of fun to add in small nuances, making the creatures more than just something to hit with an attack.

With the new item carrying system, I added in the ability to hide under bigger items. Basically invisible

Probably gonna be part of a bigger system where there's an "action" for different items in the front position.

Added in a Ground Pound ability where if the player presses the crouch button mid air during a jump they'll slam down. The ground pound does damage to surrounding enemies and can spawn armour replenishing bugs.

Changed how carrying items work. Going with a Yoshi's Island approach where they just follow behind the player.

Probably gonna have somekind of small flying companion carry the items.

Looks fantastic! I love the colours and your character designs.

I tested out the diving into a crouch from a hop, but realized it doesn't solve the problem, so I added a Slam attack if you attack while in a dive. And then a spring-up if you crouch/stand while doing the Slam attack.

I used a program called Wine. Ran it with the console command `wine ./BenjumpinHopkins.exe` from the directory I had the .exe and the .dll files in. I got some errors and linux asked me if I wanted to close the program or wait. I just waited, closed the errors, and it worked eventually lol

I got here, got all the flies up to this point, I think, and then fell down back to the beginning 😂
Lot's of fun, very addicting, especially when I figured out I can hold the jump button before I start moving. Almost feels like golf, but I am both the golfer and the golf ball lol.

lol okay, just lemme figure out how to run this on Linux, I know there's a way to run windows programs on Linux.
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
Ah okay, I know what the problem is, I'm on 1920 x 1080, and I think the initial setting just sets the viewport to that size. I'll try to figure out how to get the screen size of the monitor and change it based on that size when fullscreen. Thanks again!
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
There was a barrier of dead trees there, bringing the orb there opened the barrier so you can proceed
I'll make a note to have a visual and/or sound effect queue for future releases to get the player's attention that something changed

I'm so close to the project I don't notice this stuff 😅 thanks
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
For now, you might be able to just go into the Options menu click fullscreen and then click it again and it might resize the viewport to the proper size.

Keyboard input to open the pause menu is Tab to get to the Options menu.
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
Oh that's strange. I've tested it on a few windows systems and I haven't encountered this bug. What's your monitor resolution? I probably did something wrong with the fullscreen option in the options menu.

Also, thanks for downloading my janky demo to try it out :D
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
Linux was very easy, it was basically just a checkbox. Mac was a little different, and one of my friends who uses a mac says his computer thinks the game is a virus, so I have to figure that out lol.

Just a small update, got some feedback that it was cumbersome to crouch to punch, so I added in the ability to "dive" into a crouch if the crouch button is pressed while hopping.

Thanks for the kind words.
Right now, I'm working on Tales in the Undergrowth basically everyday that I can.
Solo development is very fulfilling, but difficult. Hard to find direction sometimes. Being very organized is the best solution for this in my opinion. Just work on one thing at a time.

Okay, so I've mixed in lots of different plants, made some of the grass straighter, and added in some fireflies and I think the tall grass looks much better now.

Oh and there's a zoom in/out effect now.

Sauce (or juice) is something I think we all want in our games, but it's really hard to nail down what's gonna provide it. Happy to know my work is brimming with sauce.
chrissmithgamedev.itch.io
I added some thinner ones...but I realized I made all these plants too wavy and now they look like seaweed lol.

Unfortunately, lights illuminating things from "behind" has plagued me since I started this project.

I've tried lots of solutions and tbh, nothing works 100%. Just an issue that comes with lighting in a 2D top-down game.

The only real solution is making a custom lighting system with shaders.

Working on tall grass, eventually for the player to hide in.

I think it looks okay, but there's just something off about it. Honestly, I probably just need to redraw the big blades of grass into thinner blades.
