Thanks so much to Antoine Allen and his team for coming to speak with us. This is just a short segment and interviews with a couple of the tenants and residents, but there are so many more stories to tell.

Another Sunday afternoon in PPE, salvaging possessions from my flat. More than two years later, there’s still water coming in, and we still don’t know how any of this meets building regulations or how the structure has been affected by being wet for so long.
Here’s me in a filter mask in my hallway. The corridor is covered in water, reflecting the scene.

Alexandra’s story shows how the systems to protect us aren’t working. @chtra.org.uk members raised our plight with the Housing Ombudsman and @rshengland.bsky.social with no action. As Ben says, you get more consumer protector you buy a kettle.

The Housing Sector Podcast #52 Luxury Flats, Legal Nightmares – with Alexandra Druzhinin

She bought a “luxury” flat in Camden. Now she’s trapped in a crumbling, uninsurable home — and now heading to court just to secure basic protection.

Housing Sector Podcast #50 Retrofitting Homes – When It Works and When It Fails with Sophie Ait-Tayeb

We explore residents’ rights, where to find support, and how retrofit can either transform homes or leave people in cold, unliveable conditions.

Listen to our Char, @unixmaisonette.com, talk to Ben on the @housingsector.bsky.social podcast about the disaster that is the Mile End Estate redevelopment. A project that exemplifies the dangers of vertical extensions and the problem attitudes in UK construction. feeds.buzzsprout.com/2366630.rss

Greedy, Stupid, Incompetent, or All of the Above?

Tower Hamlets approved it.
Eastend Homes managed it.
Gracewood Construction built it.

A rooftop extension that’s displaced families, flooded flats, and left residents in chaos.

Ouch. That sounds a horrible mess and a nightmare for the poor people living there. Companies taking on this kind of project definitely need to be very careful that their subcontractors have the necessary skills to do it. It is complex work.

A thread. Yesterday, we had a meeting with Eastend Homes about their disastrous construction project on the Eric Estate. It did not get off to a good start with the official invitation sent out by SMS only eight hours before the meeting. 1/6

Keeping up with what’s happening in the housing sector is a full-time job in itself. Two podcasts that I find useful:

Not All Fire Podcast: feeds.acast.com/public/shows...

A beautiful day outside, but still raining inside.
A clear blue sky with a bright sun shining. There are trails from aircraft in the sky, and tall trees in the background, suggesting a peaceful outdoor setting. A hallway with a wet floor covered in standing water and a few black buckets placed along the sides. Two caution signs indicate wet floor. Double doors leading outside are visible at the end of the hallway.

It might be a sunny day, but the stalactites at Coniston House are still dripping.
At the top of the photo, water is dripping from stalactites. In the background are planks and scaffolding.

Check out what I've been up to this week, focusing on housing - an issue that affects all Londoners 🏡.

We need affordable and safe homes for everyone, and I’m committed to making it happen.

Bullet points as ticks with text:

Raised community concerns with the Deputy Mayor for Housing & Regeneration, including issues related to Coniston House, Lesnes Estate and developments on the Green Belt.

Spoke at a webinar hosted by The Countryside Charity (CPRE), on how building alone won’t solve the housing crisis and we need alternative solutions like rent controls.

Brought up issues of homophobia within policing with the Deputy Mayor for Police & Crime.

While this paper focuses on those affected by cladding remediation, much of the experience applies to those living through vertical extension works. Our tenants and residents certainly recognise the unsettling of home as a safe, controllable, private sanctuary.

From the publicity, we’ve had neighbours from other blocks on the estate and from across Tower Hamlets contact us with stories of vertical extensions damaging lives and threats of more of these developments. 3/4

Anthony Gold's @eleanor-solomon.bsky.social & @lewis-sjl.bsky.social are leading a group claim for @chtra.org.uk residents to make sure the work is completed to a satisfactory standard, properly concluded, and that all homes are restored to a good condition.

Flats being constructed ON TOP of existing flats has resulted in extensive damage to people's homes.

I visited and was so shocked at the destruction - I've been amplifying the voice of residents and raising issues with London's Deputy Mayor for Housing.

This needs to be addressed urgently.
