Shouting into the abyss about the follies of the theatre sector and other messes. Living the soft(er) life on a lil island in BC, but Scarborough roots forever. ✌️🍉

I got a little typey typey. Welcome to my first substack post re: the diminishing of critics outside of arts orgs.

*I do know colour theory I also know colour trends are just as important
Hot tip, whenever I'm given a note that's nonsense I try to include the phrase "best practices" in my response for explaining what I've done. 💀

I will never forget being asked if I knew about colour theory by the same person who asked me what an asset is.

It's definitely a very cynical and superficial choice....

But if he lasted 9 months in Sydney maybe he'll last less here 😂✌️🫠
“Sydney was one of those moments where the handover wasn’t quite so elegant,” Church said. “And I think my cultural connection with Sydney and those artists was far less ingrained than the one I have with Canada."

There’s the not-so-small issue, too, of Church’s time at Sydney Theatre Company, one of the largest performing arts institutions in Australia. Church was appointed artistic director in 2015, only to depart just nine months later.

🧵
He thinks being from UK won't matter because the job isn't as "culturally specific" as detractors think.

Then @aislingmurph.bsky.social hits us with this: 🧵....

Wrote a little more about the Stratford Festival's new artistic director — the good, the bad and the hiring committee that included zero artists for the top job in Canadian theatre.

My column is online now:

Why Jonathan Church’s hire could be a mixed bag for the Stratford Festival
New artistic director has family ties to Ontario and Mirvish credits, but minimal experience in Canada’s not-for-profit theatre sector

THE JOB ISN'T AS CULTURALLY SPECIFIC AS PEOPLE THINK BUT ALSO

“Sydney was one of those moments where the handover wasn’t quite so elegant,” Church said. “And I think my cultural connection with Sydney and those artists was far less ingrained than the one I have with Canada."

SIR WHAT.
Oh love to see @aislingmurph.bsky.social follow up the feature with the tea.

Zero artists tralallaaaa

Real talk, the person many thought it would be is someone I dooooon't love, but he would've actually been good for the festival. 🤷‍♀️

Did a barely discerning grab at the library to refresh the nephew's selection and got home before realizing I grabbed a @michaelianblack.bsky.social book! Accidental victory 🙌 ✌️ ❤️
Sadder than usual that @realsambee.bsky.social isn't on tv right now BC no one is using Ted Cruz's "why am I persecuted" acting student clip and there are so many opportunities right now with his new character workshopping.

Listening to a story of actors teasing their actor "friends" about wig + costumes for a show that's just opened is just diabolically gross.

Take it from this old lady:
The ppl who think being hot shit for being "honest" > supporting you as you head into a run = not real friends.
@aislingmurph.bsky.social I know this kind of scoop isn't the Globe's cup of tea but this was part of the reason I was concerned, thought you might be interested ❤️🙏
In the comments of the videos of Dora-winning artists calling for the theatre sector to Speak the F up is an accusation that I have heard so many times it is impossible to ignore.

Everyone deserves clean drinking water. Can you put your elbows over there please?
This is S,DÁYES, the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including SENĆOŦEN speaking W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations.

I am grateful to live in one of the most beautiful places. And yet. The island is also a reminder of colonization: there are little to no old growth trees here. We did that.
Just living my best life e-biking on an island totally unsafe for cyclists, and getting home to trip on a baby gate for the worst fall I have had in years. 🫠

We are fortunate to live in the northern part of Turtle Island, but in our "elbows up" era let us not forget we are no better or worse than any nation, and we have a harmful history and present to contend with.
- Do you know how many of the recommendations from the truth and reconciliation report have been completed?
- Do you know what year indigenous women were given the right to vote?
- can you pronounce the original name of where you live?
- do all people have a right to clean drinking water?
