Movie reviews, news and interviews since 2004. We particularly love the unusual and absurd – kung fu, giallo, Czech New Wave, etc.

As usual, journalist, environmentalist, and Venezuelan Quico Toro has the most interesting take on the possible internal effects of last night’s action that I’ve seen so far.

I don’t usually post actual news here bc I don’t find social media to be a useful forum for it, but this is worth reading.
Maduro Is Gone—Venezuela’s Dictatorship Is Not
Bloodied and humiliated, the regime could turn even nastier.

Seen at the supermarket yesterday, at least we know what’s next after Maduro.

For directors, at least a couple more RMs I need to log, watching a lot while I’m reading his bio.

y’all, just because some nitwit has a dumb take doesn’t mean you have to all spend the day rampantly promoting and spreading that take by complaining about it, consider maybe not doing that

surprise surprise, Man-Eating Crab Island was actually inhabited by man-eating crabs. Truth in advertising.

Was trying to explain the overall Avatar plot to my daughter (who never saw the first two) on the way to the theater. At the end I was like, “oh and by the way there were also a bunch of space whales but that probably won’t matter in this new one” - how wrong I was.

These movies are like Oz Perkins films to me - I invariably give them a gentleman’s 6 out of 10.
#Watched Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) - You know, I’ve never been at all in the camp that finds the tall space smurfs sexy, but Blue Bêlit can definitely get some. Damn! Can we jettison the entire rest of the deadly dull cast and just follow her having drug-fueled pirate adventures?

Okay, might as well get this started.

It's January 1, which means, as I'm sure you all know, that there's a whole new bunch of characters who have entered the public domain. This time around, it's characters created in 1930.

The following is a list of pulp & pulpy characters now in the p.d.

Which is more embarrassing, being a fighting Uruk-hai who got taken out by a Hobbit, or being an Imperial Stormtrooper who got taken out by an Ewok?

#Rewatched LotR: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - perfect for a day when walking the dog felt like climbing Caradhras, so much snow. Shockingly my control freak sister-in-law let my little niece and nephew join, they spent most of the movie being like “oh no, are they going to die!?” They dug it.

I also love that Arnold’s wife and child are incapable of recognizing him in the Turbo Man costume despite being 3 feet away and hearing his deep Austrian accent, which I choose to believe is not poor scripting but an intentional reference to what a horrendous absentee father and husband he is.
