This kind of obituary, with photos of Rick as a newlywed, is The Way, and Kristen does a wonderful job writing with grace and deep care for her subject -- and her friend.

RIP, Rick. We lost a living piece of journalism history; he was the nephew of Hedley Donovan, a pretty key player at Time Inc and a big part of David Halberstam's magesterial The Powers That Be, and the assistant to Scotty Reston, similarly a key figure in that book. www.poynter.org/business-wor...

I ... was also there and I would posit that my kids, for instance - in their 20s - are not on FB and don't want to be. They're TikTok and YouTube first. And they prefer video; I think it's at least partly generational.

IDK, I hear you as someone who loves the written word, but in my experience people under let's say 35 are vertical video- and story-first. It's remarkable.

The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

And then came the internet to unbundle everything. Smartphones put the internet in everyone's pocket. The bill for that sweet public money from Wall Street started coming due, and the way to keep margins up was to cut costs. And here we are. Hearst won, which is better for Dallas.

Getting acquired by 'good' chains (Knight papers, etc.) that had gone public was sound business practice. Times Mirror, once a pretty big conglomerate, threw off massive profits and kept acquiring. PM papers died. Mergers - Timeses and Heralds became Times-Heralds - created local ad monopolies. 2/

The last part of @joshuabenton.com's Nieman piece on Alden losing out on the Dallas Morning News -- the dual class stock structure some family-run newspapers employed -- is part of why today's local newspaper landscape is so apocalyptic. www.niemanlab.org/2025/09/dall... 1/
Dallas Morning News shareholders vote to deny the hedge fund Alden Global Capital
Is a newspaper a financial asset or a community trust? This particular standoff ended with an increasingly uncommon answer.

It's wild, delicious, and utterly predictable for the original compilers of unprotected facts to bring a lawsuit against the next generation. Encyclopedias were "stealing" facts and ideas from other people's books back when we still called it "research."

Calvin & Hobbes being quoted in a Supreme Court ruling is kind of quietly mind-blowing.
