We've got ISSUES. Literally.

We scraped >100k special issues & over 1 million articles to bring you a PISS-poor paper. We quantify just how many excess papers are published by guest editors abusing special issues to boost their CVs. How bad is it & what can we do?

As I browse around, I keep an eye out for (what I think) are surprising facts.

This 2021 paper estimated that the USA, China and the UK spend USD 2.5 billion on peer review, based on the contribution made by researchers.

As of today, I am a FULL professor. I do not care much for occupational status markers. Still, it is not lost on me that only 2% of full professors are Black women. This goes beyond personal accomplishment. It is a responsibility to do as much as I can for others. That is exactly what I aim to do.

Over a month ago, Ecological Indicators returned us either the wrong editorial decision, or the wrong reviews. In a month of emails with Elsevier, we have been unable to get any help.

The last time I published there, they also returned the wrong review to us. What is going on there?

Yet another way the GRFP will bias towards financially secure, non-working, networked students from large, well-resourced institutions. sigh.

I *know* NSF POs understand the difficulties obtaining official transcripts, and certainly in the timeframe available. They might not have control over this.
Warning. ⚠️ If you are writing an NSF GRFP, new this year, you need official transcripts to apply. Beware. They will not review applications without official transcripts. ‼️
