Welsh rugby is overstretched, underfunded and falling apart again
Welsh rugby is overstretched, underfunded and falling apart again
The only thing anyone in the game appears to agree on is that they do not trust the WRU to sort it out It’s a wet Wednesday afternoon, and Wales are holding an open training session at the Principality Stadium. Admission is free, apart from the one-pound booking fee, and the 6,000 seats they’ve made available are filled with raucous kids and weary parents looking for something new to do during a rainy half-term day. The announcer keeps reminding everyone that tickets are still available for all four of Wales’ autumn internationals, against Argentina on Sunday, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. No one in the media seats can quite remember the last time there were spare tickets for a Test match against the All Blacks. I join a couple of old boys loitering in the back rows. They’re Mervyn and Steve, down from Pontypridd. The previous Friday the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) had announced their grand plan to revitalise the sport, which included – almost an hour into their press conference – the revelation that they are going to scrap one of the four regional teams. Everyone agrees that the four regions are overstretched and underfunded. A Welsh team has not finished in the top seven of the United Rugby Championship (URC) since before the pandemic. The decision to make a cut was easy enough. The harder part is figuring out who, why and when, and the hardest is persuading everyone to go along with it. Continue reading...

Quarter zips, chinos, horseplay.

Rugby union has a reputation for being 'posh', by why exactly does that stereotype exist and how true is it?

Jackie McCarthy-O’Brien was one of the early Irish women’s rugby internationals after switching codes in her thirties. 13 caps each in football and rugby union at a time when international fixtures were hard to come by!

I bought a reduced frame in dunelm with the intention to paint the chipped bits. However I then put a Welsh rugby photo in it and the chipped parts feel like an apt metaphor.

Rugbys reaction to an accusation of genitals being grabbed says a lot about how a lot of men and the rugby world in general view sexual assault.

The language being used is word for word the same as SA victim blaming.

We’ve often spoken of Siobhan Cattigan on the pod. A brilliant player who the world lost too soon. Her dad Neil will be running the London Marathon next year in aid of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. If you are able, please support.

"Before his contract was terminated" WHY WAS HIS CONTRACT TERMINATED PAL?!?!?
This frustrating article is another example of Irish rugby pundits constantly saying that the IRFU somehow didn't do any long-term sucession planning for Sexton, when (as the article itself admits) multiple alternatives were in fact given an extended run and for various reasons haven't worked out.

Hollie Davidson will become the second referee in history to officiate two Rugby World Cup finals and the first to do so in the women’s competition!

The other is of course André Watson who refereed the men’s 1999 and 2003 editions.
