It started with a trip cut short by storm Éowyn and ends in the beautifully autumnal #Connemara #Gaeltacht. 8 months & 180 test sessions later, data collection is finished.
Now on to the analyses - how do #Irish - #English #bilingual children process their languages? Watch this space.

The photo shows a primary school building in the center left. The sky above is bright blue with a few white clouds and there is a green lawn in front of the school. In the background on the right is a small hill. The picture was taken from a distance. In the front right of the picture is a black hand luggage bag. It stands on a paved way that leads up to the school building.

Children are incredible language learning machines. But how do they do it? Our latest paper, just published in TICS, synthesizes decades of evidence to propose four components that must be built into any theory of how children learn language. 1/

In the final keynote of #ISB15, Robert Hartsuiker @roberthartsuiker.bsky.social is re-examining a question at the heart of #psycholinguistic research on #bilingual language processing: Is bilingual lexical access really language non-selective?

Let's find out.

Keynote by Professor Elizabeth D. Peña on assessing #DLD in #bilingual children and busting myths:
Bilinguals score in the normative mean in at least one language. There is no "bilingual delay" & bilinguals with DLD are not double delayed.
Look at #individualdifferences, not group averages.

Rowena Garcia is presenting research at #ISB15 showing that #crosslinguistic #priming occurs across #typologically unrelated languages & without overlap of constituent order. The degree of overlap modulated the magnitude of the effect.

Janet van Hell just opened with a fascinating keynote on the influence of speaker & listener characteristics on the processing of semantic & syntactic speech errors.
It seems like using opportunities to immerse yourself in non-native speech (like #ISB15) can improve your processing accuracy.

🗣️Janet van Hell will deliver a talk on the neurocognitive signatures of accented speech processing.
