One huge oversight I somehow missed and no one pointed out until my boss’s 10 year old son noticed yesterday - I didn’t credit the incredible artists in the book itself. I tagged them in the Amazon listing. Just not in the print. 🤦🏻‍♀️ @claudiall.bsky.social did the cover. I’ll tag the artists as I go.
PREFACE There are a few certainties in life: death, taxes, and Chase Utley staring down a pitch as it hurtles toward his body. On May 19, 2017, I saw a photo of Chase Utley going nose-to-chest with a towering Giancarlo Stanton during a Marlins/Dodgers brawl and thought "Chase Utley isn't afraid of pain because he fought in World War II." I still have no idea why that was my first thought, but it was, and the idea amused me immensely. Like so many of the things I do on Twitter, I decided to run the joke into the ground. Seriously, I don't know why anyone follows me. For the next two seasons, Chase continued to be the grizzled veteran, and I continued to write weird little vignettes about a thoroughly fictional soldier fighting for the US army in World War II. Sergeant Utley is not Chase, but I would like to think that if they ever met in real life, Sgt. Utley would give Chase Utley an "atta boy, Sam" for his focus, his discipline, and his complete disregard for personal safety. If you're reading this, thank you for buying the book. If you're reading this and you're associated with the Dodgers, Major League Baseball, or Chase Utley, please don't sue me. His hands are on Stanton’s hips and he is a full 8” shorter and half Stanton’s width. It’s like looking at a chihuahua next to a standard poodle. Totally different sizes and builds and Stanton could snap Utley in half with one hand.
