We've renewed our display panel at @theslipinnyork.bsky.social in Clementhorpe, #York, as the history of shipbuilding and other industries nearby is of great interest to customers. There's a new inn sign too, as the old sign was very misleading www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk/blog/echoes-...

We spoke in favour of the new Toppings York bookshop tonight at 1 Museum St, and I'm delighted to say that the Planning Committee voted unanimously against the officer recommendation to refuse it. They have now referred it back for officer approval.

This is 'Brontë Country' - the middle of Keighley, barely a couple of miles from Haworth in living memory.

Coal-fired factories, quarries, worked out clay pits, gas works, engineering companies...
Map of urban Keighley, 1962 - an industrial, urban, space with clay pits serving brick works on the right... Simon Jenkins was 21 when this map was surveyed, but PPE at Oxford might not have mentioned this.

Our new blogpost at www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk/blog/helen-s... pays tribute to Helen Snelson, a wonderful champion of #HistoryEducation. In her memory we're contributing to the @histassoc.bsky.social Teaching Fellowship Programme to support teaching of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller histories.

Our next talk is tomorrow night, Fri 23 May, at Clements Hall York, see www.clementshallhistorygroup.org.uk. Anne Houson features the history of Rowntree Park, gifted to the people of York over 100 years ago. It looks at how the park and our relationship to it has changed over those years.
