We had a brilliant time at Lancaster University's public engagement festival, Campus in the City, yesterday! We engaged with 260 people in Morecambe with ultrasound, nasalance, accent quizzes, gender and language, and a grammar escape room! @lancslinguistics.bsky.social @phoneticslab.bsky.social
A group of 10 colleagues in a room. Most of us are wearing red Lancaster Phonetics Lab t-shirts. I am holding an ultrasound probe and Sam Kirkham is holding a nasalance device.

I wrote a quick tutorial for a student on how to use to R to get Whisper to automatically transcribe your audio. I figured others might find it useful too. #linguistics joeystanley.com/blog/whisper/

New open access paper in Speech Communication on “nasal coarticulation in Lombard speech”: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I argue that, in Lombard speech, coarticulatory vowel nasality falls amid a compressed range of nasalisation, but coarticulation is maintained

Scaling laws for nonlinear dynamical models of articulatory control

➡️ My new article out today in JASA Express Letters, in which I present some new advances on nonlinear task dynamic models of articulatory speech movements.

The DESTRUCTION OF THE HUMANITIES at Cardiff University

Management seems to think that Humanities scholars don't know how to read statistics

Diving into their proposals shows how they are trying to hide the true extent of damage to Humanities disciplines here

A view of the River Lune in Lancaster on a very still day in winter. The blue sky is reflected in the river water. There is an architecturally unusual footbridge over the river called the Millennium Bridge. It has two vertical posts with suspension wires attached. Some houses and buildings are visible in the background.

What a lovely and moving account of how #Irish is not confined to rural & Gaeltacht areas, and how it matters in an urban space like Dublin. #langsky #minoritizedlanguages

“Speaking Irish in Dublin brings meaning and purpose to my life.”

In a new essay for the Smithsonian’s Folklife Magazine, join ELP Mentor Alexandra Philbin on a train ride into Dublin, as she reflects on history, family, and the revival of the Irish language.

We present an approach to collecting articulatory and acoustic data in public spaces combined with public engagement.
We also assess noisiness of acoustic data. Acoustic data collected at a market stall are noisier than lab data. But 96% of our market data were adequate for acoustic analysis.
A graph comparing signal to noise ratio results from data collected in fiver different locations: UCL recording room, UCL sound booth, Lancaster sound booth, Blackburn Market, and Burnley Market. The average values for the market locations are lower than the university settings. Two people in blue t-shirts are at opposite ends of a table recording ultrasound with two members of the public.

New speakers - people learning and reclaiming a language - are key to any language revitalization movement. 🌱

Understanding what motivates people to reclaim and learn their languages is an important part of revitalization work. A new book explores these issues in Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic):

In theory, yes. But I would be cautious about using these measures for contrasts relying on the tongue tip. You would need to be very confident of capturing a good tongue tip ultrasound image, which can be tricky. I can recommend this paper for more info: doi.org/10.1044/2023...
