Citizens’ group seeking to ensure that as Ireland rolls out offshore wind, our valuable vulnerable marine ecosystems are protected. Yes to Marine Protected Areas. No to developer-led planning.

Apparently, according to Dr Lorcan Sirr, meeting housing targets would, in itself, mean emissions targets will not be met. We need some joined up thinking on this! And, of course, protecting and restoring nature is crucial.

Ireland could face fines of up to €26 billion if it fails to achieve reductions in carbon emissions in 2030, which is exactly where we're currently headed.

Paying farmers to rewild could *massively* help, and be a lifeline for our crashing nature. It's just SO obvious.

State 'facing €20bn fine' if it fails to reduce emissions
The State could face a cost of €20bn if it fails to achieve reductions in carbon emissions in 2030, according to an assessment by the watchdog which advises on the public finances.

Interesting to see the truth about the real cost of offshore wind coming from Denmark, Europe’s forerunner in this industry. Will Ireland learn the lesson before it’s too late?

It may well be that @npwsireland.bsky.social are finally turning a corner on rhododendron, but I would call on them to release the report on the issue that they commissioned some time back and to publish their methodologies and work programmes so we can be sure

Here's one of the warnings I gave in an article before the US election. It's devastating to see it all happening.

Never underestimate the vengeful nihilism at the heart of this movement. The glitter-eyed fanatics behind Project 2025 and other such programmes will smash whatever is most precious to you, partly at the behest of commercial interests – but also to enjoy watching the pain it inflicts. They will crush beauty, joy, community and hope precisely because other people value them.

When FDI and data centres are driving policy, concerns about the damaging environmental impacts of developer-led offshore planning can be dismissed as irrelevant or NIMBYism. A big mistake... @foeireland.bsky.social

This money
might facilitate more balanced reporting on such issues as how offshore wind infrastructure is sited and the vital need to protect the very ecosystems we will decimate with developer-led plans. @fiannafailparty.bsky.social @fine-gael.bsky.social

Housing is essential but also complex. IF even basic construction targets were met, according to Dr Locan Sirr, that alone will push emissions beyond targets. So how to square that circle?

But are either the FF or FG approaches what is best for Irish citizens? If the yardstick is GDP or budgets, maybe. If it’s care of our country, the bogs & rivers & forests & seas, neither.

This @pbresnihan.bsky.social podcast is essential listening for all who have an interest in the environment, energy, data centres and how the capitalist movement is embedding itself deeply & deviously, in such critical systems as Ireland's energy infrastructure.

Costs Rica is top of the wish list. Delighted you got to go there. Fingers crossed Ireland will listen, or rather our leaders will…

Yesterday, I returned from 3 weeks in Costa Rica, where I went to find out what can be learned from their spectacular success rewilding a country.

I cannot overstate how awe-inspiring the trip was: nature loss CAN be reversed on a huge scale, benefiting *everyone*.

Rebecca Hunter @irishtimes.com bemoans decline of wildlife in our seas. Beautifully written essay calls for honest & urgent response from @npwsireland.bsky.social @COSullivanTD. Areas designated must TRULY protect. No more paper parks or manipulated boundaries & please give us honest processes too.

Red = lowest ecological integrity.

Ireland has the great honour of being probably *the* most ecologically trashed nation in all Europe. 🏆 🏆 🏆
