I really liked the second one too, though I appreciated how she really leans into Taoist themes in the third and fourth books

I feel that way about horror movies in which children are killed…which is why I avoid a lot of horror generally

I just read Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea quartet (of which Tehanu is the last) recently and they are all absolutely lovely

went to the opera for my second time yesterday (Das Rheingold), a splendid evening out with a cute boy - leaves me all the more eager to see other operas

That's lovely! The small jackals at top nose-booping with snakes seem rather unusual

what marvellous finds - especially the relief of Anubis, rather sharp and distinctive features

July 4th is above all the one day in the year I have to bite my tongue and remind myself ‘allow people to enjoy things’…like Reginald Jeeves, I would rather not dwell on what happened in America in 1776

I am thinking specifically of gay people who want kids but treat their homosexuality as an inalienable obstacle to parenthood, despite ever-increasing availability of sorrogacy or adoption, but there are probably other examples of this sort of self-defeatism

there are exceptions to this, but I wonder how often in life the limitations people suffer under aren't actually their circumstance but their attitude about it
'I want x so very much,' someone says, 'but I can't have it' - others helpfully suggest ways they can make it happen - 'no, its not for me'
