My opinion on Star Wars is that Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 were amazing and season 3 was really bad

Engaging with Will Stancil gets a lot more engagement than I’ve ever had. Interesting in experience and I will try to write less sweeping statements (eg, “most people” instead of “anyone”)

The idea that if Brooklyn rents were at Dallas or Houston levels anyone would still choose Dallas or Houston over Brooklyn is kind of insane
While it’s probably true that housing costs are keeping people out of CA and NY, there’s this notion that middle America or the sunbelt will empty out and depart to Brooklyn if Brooklyn built more units, and I’m pretty sure the people who believe this all live in Brooklyn already
Will is totally I missing the rejoinder. Way more people would live in the Northeast and coastal CA if we allowed for abundant home building.

Michael Burry has hundreds of millions of dollars. Why does he need to charge almost $40/month for his substack?

Why aren’t there more Civil War movies and tv shows? Who doesn’t want to watch Grant start from nothing and take over at Cairo down to Vicksburg? @jamellebouie.net

I love a War of 1812 reference

I wonder what the Scottish towns in 1760 North Carolina would have said if someone told them they had to “assimilate?” Would the spit have been in the face or at the feet?
Nalin Haley: "It's irresponsible to have legal immigration."

I feel like I just hallucinated. Did he really say “under any President, Democrat or Republican, they’re gonna care about American people’s healthcare and if they can put food on the table and try to bring down costs”??? Mark! No! Republicans DO NOT CARE ABOUT THIS. That’s the essence of the fight!
Mark Kelly notably declines to endorse Chuck Schumer as the leader of Senate Dems going forward

As a busy dad with a sick kid, struggling to follow the contours of the Dem cave — that said, it looks like they funded SNAP to set up the same fight in January, right?

If Dems run on impeachment I think they win the senate
McCaskill: There's people like Sherrod Brown and Roy Cooper that are very happy tonight. We didn't think the senate was going to be in play next year. I think after tonight, it’s in play.

It was weird watching the World Series and the announcers talking about George Springer like some kind of WS legend, not as a fucking cheater. The dude should have been banned from baseball not praised on national tv for his outstanding stats from 2017

@mikepetriello.bsky.social who starts game 7 for LA now?

Seems like the Tolkien discourse since DHS posted a shire meme forgets entirely about WWI and WWII. Sauron is Hitler. The orcs are Nazis. The central dilemma is whether to use the weapons of evil against evil and whether that makes you evil as well.
October 31, 2025 at 8:56 PM
If Tolkien’s orcs were a stand-in for a people it was Nazis
Tolkien's orcs do reason like a human being does, which is why he spends quite a bit of his notes trying to wrestle with the implications of that. But I think it's stupid to think he /consciously/ intended them as a /stand-in/ for a particular human people, culture or ethnicity.

It’s lame how people think they’re too cool to care about the destruction of the White House. It’s the people’s house, he has no right to do that. It’s an abomination and it takes nothing away from criticizing the other abominations to say so!

LLMs are intriguing but it’s undeniable that basic search engine function has declined dramatically. It was way better when Google would just highlight some FAQs than this garbage where you have to ask exactly the right question to get an answer and even then it’s garbled.

What’s so funny about this is that the Trump admin is obviously anti-capitalism.
🚨 New directive NSPM-7 targets "anti-capitalism," “anti-Christian,” and “anti-American" opinions as indicators of extremist violence, authorizing an army of 4,000 counter-terrorism officers to prevent crimes that haven't happened:

My boss asked me to see if AI could help me improve our contract templates. I ran it through Copilot and it spit out complete useless jibberish. Maybe someone lawyers will be helped by AI, but it is not this day.

I’m not a huge fan of this thing where we just assume in the discourse that the suspects arrested for crimes (Mangione, Robinson) are in fact the culprit. It’s not a conspiracy to say we should wait until they’re proven guilty.

Exactly this. Performing opposition is the absolute key.
Even if the outcome is the same -- the Republican majorities + Trump get what they want -- I think there is value in *performing* opposition, in two ways. First, it motivates the base. Second, it dramatizes the conflict to draw the attention of the politically inattentive.

... making it a direct assault on Trump's authoritarianism. Despite what all the consultants think, Americans don't want a king & respond badly when informed what Trump is doing.

HOWEVER. The counterfactual in which Dems win the shutdown necessarily involves Dem unity.

Just one question, who wants to listen to an AI podcast? The human element is what makes it interesting.
