Hurt the players' characters, yes. With the player's consent (ongoing or specific) and while making sure you won't also hurt the player. Collab with them. Keep surprises to the things there's ongoing consent for. Hurt the character with in-game things without hurting the player with irl things

The "for love of the game and the table" part sadly isn't true of every DM and I hate the stories I've heard of DMs taking away agency, ignoring triggers, hurting their players, etc. Finding people to play with is hard so the choice for folks is sometimes be miserable with this DM or not play at all

Your DM likely spends more money on your campaign than you think. We do it with full hearts, the way you buy something for someone's birthday or something.

Your DM is giving you a gift, or trying. The best gift they can manage. Out of love, for you and for the game.*

Still thinking about it, heart still full. James Gunn is many things, one being he's very very good at writing authentic characters with complicated and real emotions, in a way that isn't ham-fisted but just feels like a byproduct of the story. But it's intentional and wonderful to experience

I feel like people who create recognize this dance he's doing all too well and we know how it ends. If nothing else, reached that point where you can barely stand to look at the thing you've been trying to make because you've carried it in your mind for way too long

Not long ago I had a full body realization when someone on You Are Not So Smart talked about laughter and how rarely we laugh because something is funny and that laughter is usually a signal of "hey I'm listening and this is nice". Now I'm very aware of my non-funny laughs and the world is changed

The whole "I don't care who gets hurt if I'm trying to solve a problem or figure something out and I'll intently watch someone suffer and die if it might reveal something" thing is just understandable enough while obviously being ENTIRELY despicable and monstrous
