🚨 NEW AUDIT: AFFORDABLE HOUSING OVERSIGHT

We found:
📉Financially distressed properties
❌Income & rent limit violations
🪳Habitability issues (e.g., infestations)

The City needs stronger oversight & enforcement instead of a reactive & siloed approach.

Los Angeles, YOU MIGHT be PAYING MORE in FEES SOON! 🗑️🚗💰

Whether or not you will be paying more depends, actually! Let's talk about the increased costs facing the City as they try to tackle the budget deficit.

“‘We tried to provide a performance audit but we weren't able to get cooperation,’ Mejia told LAist.

We are fighting for Charter Reform in the City of LA and need everyone’s help so that the City has a strong independent watchdog over your tax dollars.

This is the second time the City has opted for an expensive outside vendor instead of using our Office.

While cost of living continues to rise in LA pushing more ppl into homelessness, and future homelessness funds are at risk, the City spends money it does not have on outside contractors.
controller.lacity.gov
The plaintiff suggested that our Office be the monitor, which makes sense since we are independent, have conducted several homelessness related audits, and built the City’s homelessness dashboard.

Unfortunately, the City rejected this idea in favor of an outside contractor.

As part of the Alliance case, a federal judge ordered an audit of LA’s homelessness spending and efforts.

Following the results of that audit, which found serious data and accountability issues, the judge now wants a Monitor to oversee the City’s homelessness spending and efforts.
controller.lacity.gov
Why is the City hiring a Monitor?

In 2020, the “LA Alliance for Human Rights” (a coalition of business owners, and housed & unhoused residents) sued the City of LA for its alleged failures in responding to homelessness.

$800 PER HOUR RATE BREAKDOWN

• Phase I (establish framework): $100,000 / 125 hours
• Phase IA (1st quarter report): $100,000 / 125 hours
• $72,000 / 90 hours for each subsequent quarter until June 30, 2027

(Doesn't include separate billings for data experts & clerical staff)

How much is the City of LA considering paying for an outside monitor on local homeless efforts instead of having our Office do it for FREE? 🤔

AT LEAST $560,000 OR $800 PER HOUR FOR 700 HOURS (MAX) OF WORK!

This diverts funds from essential services during financial hardship.

The City of LA spent MILLIONS to avoid transparency and accountability by my Office and is going to do it again to have an outside monitor keep an eye on the city's homelessness spending and efforts! 🤯

BTW 🔎 Check out our homelessness dashboard at homelessdashboard.lacontroller.app

You all asked for it, so we're here to bring you that FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY! 💰🔍

Our Office has provided more accurate revenue forecasts and urged more accountability on overspending, but at the end of the day, it's up to the City Council and Mayor to make financial decisions. Today, they made a big one.

We are hopeful. We'll track it and keep you all updated.
