Project Motor Racing is rough and feels like it shipped too early, but its technical foundation is solid. In my review, I cover gameplay impressions, outline its issues, and run benchmarks - a good example of why I started reaching out for review copies!

A technical dive into Project Motor Racing – we’re racing, not farming (with mixed results)
One of the only games that moved away from Unreal Engine, was it worth it? Gameplay impressions from a gamepad user, benchmarks, highlights, and gripes.

Border color is a nice way to debug texture wrapping issues, and it reveals that all those trees have an incorrect sampling mode set (as evidenced by a 1px line floating around them).

Aww, I wanted to try this masterpiece, but it crashes at the race start even if I use dgVoodoo or DDrawCompat 😭

Turns out there are car games that elude even me; this particular one seems pretty bad from the reviews, though.

The default overhead camera is just fine for rallying, but being able to look at these glorious cars up close with the chase camera is something else.

I did not have a "ChoroQ rally game" in my 2026 bingo card, but Super Woden Rally Edge has bonuses that deliver on exactly that.

This reminded me of what I saw in Agents of Mayhem years ago - "Standard Issue" getting translated as if "issue" meant "problem" in this context

A small pet peeve of mine - every other rally game has a Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500, but not even ONE game features a Sierra Sapphire that also did some rally over the years. Maybe one day we'll see it in some game...

Today I learned that this specific FH5 translation line was fine in pre-release copies, as evidenced by this footage from October 2021. It's also fine in the current version of the game, yet my launch copy in November 2021 had a nonsensical "[literal] horizon, that [one] is Mexico".

Finally, a camera angle control via mouse from HT2 4.0-5.8 in KotR 8.2/1.3. However, due to the wide screen resolution, there are problems with centering the camera.

Gymkhana is really satisfying when you manage to keep your lines smooth.

Made a small postmortem on reddit re: if the game announcements are even alive as a marketing tool.

Hopefully the mods will not delete it

King of the Road's minimap was "snapping" to the UI grid coordinates, which with D2GI meant a 1600x900 grid. This made the lines distort, but also made icons (especially the other drivers) stutter. Implemented a solution to preserve sub-pixel movements, and everything is smooth!

D3D9 call counts for the minimap drawing before/after my changes - safe to say I made it draw a bit more efficiently.

What I wanted to do: Optimize the minimap rendering.
What I did instead: Found a bug in DXVK.

Learned of a nasty DX9 gotcha I was previously unaware of: when using the Shader Model 2.0, the fog is still applied by the fixed-function pipeline, but with Shader Model 3.0, it's not! This "broke" rendering when I downgraded a few shaders from 3.0 to 2.0 for compatibility.

It might not look the part, but this is THE best version of Rig'n'Roll you can get: in English, with the DLC, fully patched, with zero DRM. As of last week, you can also get this specific version on ZOOM Platform.

Oh, so KotR also forces itself to use only one CPU core, which means ALL the threads from the graphics drivers etc. need to run on a single core. Making it use all cores "automatically" gives me 4x the FPS with no code optimizations...

This minimap is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW to render, oh my.
