In addition to a land acknowledgement, I've been doing the occasional "situation acknowledgement".

We are living in nervous times and bear witness daily to the erosion of norms and due process. Acknowledging this truth provides permission to engage in excellence in the moment.

Bill Fabricius makes the wonderful point that the officers of family courts are prone to overlook how boys maintain relationships with their fathers during separation and divorce. 2/2

Robert Putnam and @richardreeves.bsky.social collaborated on a thoughtful essay connecting today's crisis among boys and men to the 1900s.

In response, my colleague Bill Fabricius submitted a response with some findings from our Parents and Youth Study.

These are weird times. If you can assign an incomplete grade rather than fail a student, I hope you will consider it.
cookston.bsky.social
The advantage of an incomplete is that faculty can give students a chance to earn the grade they were on track to receive and students don't lose out on the tuition costs.

Plus, faculty rarely operate according to deadlines...things are ready when they are done.
cookston.bsky.social
The disadvantage of an incomplete for faculty is that we need to nudge students or change the timing of due dates in online learning platforms and are expected to grade papers that should have been submitted long ago.
cookston.bsky.social
The disadvantage of an incomplete (I) grade is that students sometimes forget about the I and aren't motivated to go back in time to a semester to do the required work and end up with the lower grade anyhow.
cookston.bsky.social
Last fall a student was on track to earn an A but she neglected to submit one paper when she got the flu and that put her on track to earn a C in the class. I assigned the student an incomplete and she finished the paper during the winter break.
cookston.bsky.social
The advantage of an incomplete grade (to the student) is that they have a prescribed period of time (usually a year) to complete the work. Otherwise, they will be assigned the grade they would have earned with no credit for the missing work.
cookston.bsky.social
Students can request (or faculty can assign) an incomplete grade when a portion of the required work has not been submitted and when there is a justified reason for the work being late.

From my perspective, all online classes in the midst of a global pandemic is reason enough.

It's the last week of the summer semester and students are sick, stressed out, and stretched thin.

I'm advising some to consider requesting an incomplete grade, but it's clear to me that most university and college students don't know what that means.

A thread...

My son listened to this song so many times on my phone in 2023 that it ended up on my end of year list of most listened to song. Dark times.

Hey folks, I have a HUGE request from the Trevor Project and would appreciate help getting the word out.

Trevor is now recruiting for it's 2025 National Youth Survey. They need people 13-24, LGBTQ+, in the United States to take it.

This research is critical to LGBTQ+ rights.

Take it here:

It's disappointing to learn the NSF Build and Broaden program has been archived. While not surprising, this was a great mechanism for building science capacity.

I had planned to write a proposal that would have been due Jan 26th. So glad I opted to play video games and ride my bike instead.
