I rarely like anything but Mike Petriello’s work is consistently awesome.

I won’t share it here, so you have to view the article to enjoy it, but the Arraez stat that mentions Nellie Fox is so great.
The most fascinating free agent of the winter isn't Pete Alonso or Bo Bichette.

It's Luis Arraez. We finally get to see how teams really value batting average.

On what he brings, and the one very obvious team that should sign him ...

Making sense of Arraez's complex free-agent case
This winter features what just might be the most divisive case we’ve seen for a free agent in years. We’re talking about Luis Arraez, who is either “the best contact hitter alive” or “a below-average ...

The 2026 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot as announced moments ago by @baseballhall.org (baseballhall.org/news/2026-bb...). Results will be announced Jan. 20th. Game on!

No one cares about All MLB teams but it grinds my gears that Cristopher Sanchez didn’t make the first team. After being snubbed from the All Star Game and getting 100% of the NL Cy Young second place votes.

Why is he not more respected?

Gary Sheffield played with 8 different franchises and Detroit is probably the last one I’d remember him for.

Debuted with MIL
Batting title with SD
WS ring with FLA
2,000+ PA & 2 ASGs with LAD
3rd for MVP with ATL
2nd for MVP + playoff runs with NYY
Hit 500th HR with NYM

If a similar rule were to have been in place in the past, several current Hall of Famers would have become ineligible and never elected.

Including both inductees from the 2025 Classic Baseball Era Players Committee - Dick Allen and Dave Parker.
If this is indeed the ballot we see tomorrow, it’s worth noting that Bonds and Clemens could be facing permanent ineligibility if they fail to reach five votes (they both had <4 last time).

I have many thoughts on this ballot and, barring a podcast invite, I’ll write them up in the next couple of days.

Something very important to remember heading into this year’s committee cycle is the following eligibility rule change that was announced in March.

Bill James selected Charlie Bennett as the catcher for his 1880s Gold Glove team.

Home Run Charlie had the highest 1880s OPS+ of anyone on James’ team.

For 6 straight seasons (1963-1968), the winners of the National League Gold Glove Award for outfield were the same three players EVERY YEAR:

Roberto Clemente
Curt Flood
Willie Mays

In Florida visiting family friends and one of them said that he’s friends with a Brad Scherzer whose son Max is a ballplayer.

He asked me if Max is any good.

I was like um, yeah, conservatively a top 50 pitcher in the history of the sport so, yeah.

The best concert I ever saw, and only one I ever attended alone, was D’Angelo with ?uestlove at the TLA in Philly.

D’Angelo was a musical genius of Prince/Sly Stone proportions. Massive genius.

RIP.

Here's a thing I did not expect to have happened this year: At 34 years old, J.T. Realmuto:

- led the Majors in innings caught
- had more innings caught than any C since Yadi back in 2016
had more innings caught than any Phillie since 1999.

What a beast (complimentary).

That anyone would be surprised that Roki Sasaki could excel as a closer is baffling to me.

However, it is a logical result of the popular groupthink that overinflates relieving and the value of relievers to that of starters and their role.

30,000 people paid to attend the Phillies play the Phillies in an intrasquad exhibition. Insane.

It’s very unsettling though.

Nola v. Harper.

Luzardo v. Schwarber.

Not sure when to cheer.

I am consistently amazed at how incompetent Democratic leadership is at messaging. Just totally incapable people.

They say so many words and give so much nuance when they need to just repeat three phrases:

Trump Shutdown
Trump Healthcare Tax
Release the Epstein Files
