Defending reality, not the billionaires, Western Devs are fine. Focused on spreading understanding about the monumental engine of AAA and how to best steer it

Stephen Totilo's new article about EA's CEO compensation fits perfectly into the characterization I had already illustrated. Despite invoking SEC filings, he seems unwilling or unable to make accurate inferences from them

The Selective Hearing of Gaming Journalists
It's always been curious to be aware of the little details the journalist 'forgets' to divulge

It's fun to see people critizing the narrative of "it's more than 30 game devs that made this" for Clair Expedition.

But will then turnaround and glorify Hideo Kojima as if he's god's gift to game design and completely pretend like he doesn't have an army of devs doing all of the work

BlueSky's #gamedev twitter is distraught because the guy who worked to put it together is adding some ads to recoup costs/time and to be able to make future improvements.

Naturally 99% of the people are distraught because if the feed earns a single dollar it will outperform their game revenues

I couldn't have described his channel any more accurately myself

Stop Killing Games has always been curious to me, I cannot imagine anything more effective at being able to consolildate market share, power and intellectual property rights than Ross' proposal he calls 'stop killing games' for me. If this was my movement, people would have conspiracies about it

so many #gamedev talk about how the industry is in crisis, unfair platforms causing damage, or how publishers dont support indies.

Except once again, there's a massive increase in the number of games released on steam. The industry is so dead that more people than ever are making games

If you want to be mad about the switch 2 prices, be mad, thats fine. Please stop trying to justify it. Your justifcations suck, your "reasons" are poorly thought out and do not comport with reality.

You don't even need a good reason, "prices increase, i dont want to pay more, i'm mad." Thats fine

People were less upset over eggs 2xing in price over the period a couple months than they are these Switch game prices on a new generation of hardware lol

The social media landscape on game dev truly looks like more of an aesthetic for artsy folk, than the harsh and gritty realties I see in professional world of game dev.

I see more parallels to my work around Minecraft modders than 'game devs' its astounding to me that the game dev veneer caught on

What years were the golden era of video game development such that everyone says that game dev is ruined by CEOs now unlike back then?

Follow up question. How many game developers were there in that time? total # of employees

Uncomfortable question: How many of those devs were women?
February 28, 2025 at 10:11 AM
Are there many Modders in the #gamedev space here? I see plenty of devs in early development on their projects. I'd love to see more people who have polished an enhancement to a game or added a new module and celebrate that achievemnt

Games need to be profitable for developers to continue to make games, we all agree with this.

If developers don't want to bother with the finance side, that's fine. But it means the corpos have to be even more money focused to balance it out.

Its strange for people to complain after not bothering

For those frustrated with the Unity layoffs and that JR seemingly ruined things and got paid:
Based on proxy statements of unvested equity, and holdings, Riccitiello looks to be facing potentially >$120 million in losses on Unity over the past year.

No tears from me, but he's not been unscathed

Modern Advancements in tech for game dev has been a double edged sword. The early days had notable upfront costs, which limited opportunity but it created a level of urgency. Create or die.

Today, the upfront costs can be minimized. But this means thousands of indes who meander and never finish

Indie Influencers who encourage people to take up Indie Dev are the some of the most sinister people online.

They're not doing it to make the industry better. They do it to build their own fame, sell their courses. Get their clicks.

People who do not caution getting into indie dev are dangerous

Be incredibly skeptical of prominent voices who campaign against AAA as evil or mismanaged.
When they depict the downfall of AAA, understand that every single one of them is lying to you about their authority on the inner workings, or accuracy of their statements. They do not back it up with action
February 8, 2025 at 11:50 PM
The negativity online, from gamers/devs about the "golden days" of video games is popular. However, the people advancing the industry, things you complain about. Know the real reason you don't like things.

You got old, your imagination has been replaced by experiences. You've always been niche

On social media, games devs will talk about how everyone is struggling to survive on the low pay. Or how there is no meritocracy and that promotion is a combo of networking and ingroup privledges.

Make no mistake, a large layer of devs, not just execs. Earn ALOT of money. Also, yall like to lie

Time to unload some of the information that is overlooked about game dev in online spaces.

People are very invested in pushing a narrative of the industry being incredibly dire due to complex or powerful forces.

It's unpopular to acknowledge some reality, but its worth putting it into the ether

Game Developers dedicate their career to trying to understand how their game plays not just from their own eye, but also from all different player's perspective.

But when it comes to applying that skill to understanding the business side. They make zero effort and jump to the worst interpretations
